    Ssd

    Who has one?
They've gotten REALLY cheap, and now I want to replace the 40GB that I've been using for a while.
Has anyone had one die? I remember that a chief concern when they came out was that flash memory only had a lifetime of like 4 billion read/write operations.

they havent gotten cheap. they still average $2/gb. and considering you can get a regular hd for about .05/gb($60 for 1tb). ill still choose the space over booting windows faster.

One died at work over the summer, but that SOB had been through hell and back so I'm sure it was a hardware failure related to it's use more than just the typical wear and tear on a typical tablet.

40GB is still pretty small for a full OS and programs, but I guess if you aren't planning on having too many large programs on the machine it could work out. Keeping all of your data, such as music, movies, photos, etc., on a separate drive (be it internal or external) would make the space limitation a moot point. Sure, you're going to be limited by the speed of that drive when opening those files. However, the advantage of the SSD is with the speed it launches programs and does all of the program operations.

So if you feel like 40GB is fine for your application I'd go ahead and get one, only like $100 (still pretty ridiculous) so at least you're not really dumping money into the thing.

Why not go for one of those hybrid drives? It loads faster than a sata drive but with the capacity of one and still cheaper than a full SSD.

I have 2x 256GB Samsungs and 1x 128GB Samsung. No failures yet, and they are nice and speedy. I have the 256GB drives in my desktop and the 128GB in my notebook.
