    looking at getting a volvo

I was meant to buy King James' civic but due to transmission issues, I'm not sure if we can afford to buy it now.

That said, we've been looking at affordable cars recently. This one has caught our eye:
    http://peterborough.kijiji.ca/c-cars...AdIdZ274083107

I'll include our emails back and forth so you guys can see more info about it. Pretty much I just wanted your feedback about things to watch for, etc.

it could use new tires and a horn, thats it really

That's not bad. It's still drivable and able to pass safety inspection, etc? Is it a 4cyl or 6? How is it on gas?

Sorry for all of the questions. My Wife and I were looking at getting a car from a friend but that car's transmission isn't right so we're looking elsewhere now. Not having a car around here is pretty rough

    Thanks!
    Matt

questions are fine, as many as you like, its a 4 cylinder turbo, pretty good on gas esp on hwy, cruise control which is great, heated seats work, yes its drivable and I believe it would pass safety as it did 2 yrs ago when I bought it along with the e-test, but I know it needs a horn and there are 8 rims with tires but the tires are pretty worn. Volvos tend to last a long time, the mileage on this one is really low for a Volvo.

    Hi Jeanne,

Few more questions for you. How much is the inspection/etest and when is it due? Does it burn any oil? Any idea of an approx. mpg or l/100km?

Also, aside from a bit of rust, are there any other signs that this isn't a brand new car? The body looks quite good for being an '89. Just curious about any bumps or groans it may have.

    Thanks!
    Matt

    Hi Matt
the e-test is 39.45 with tax included, the inspection all depends on the mechanic and what, if anything has to be fixed, it is always due when you buy a car, in order to get new plates you have to have a safety certificate, I will give you the old safety papers from 2 years ago and you can bring to your own mechanic, all that really needs to be done is a horn (not expensive) and I am not sure about the tires, some may pass but you may have to buy a few new tires as the ones on are pretty worn, there are 8 rims with snows, I don't recall that it burns any oil, the body is good, no dents or holes but few bits of rust but not an eye sore, Volvos are pretty decent when it comes to the steel they use to build the cars, unlike other cars so the bodies last alot longer so it is not surprising that there are no holes, I also think it is a very cool looking car, also the mileage is 246000 km which apparantly for a Volvo is just at the break in stage. It is an older car but Volvos are made to last, it just needs to have regular oil changes like any car and to be driven, it breaks my heart to see it sit. You will find it totally comfortable to drive, the leather seats are comfy and heated. I am happy to reduce the price for you to $800.00 to offset some of these costs.

    Jeanne

I'll definitely talk to my Wife about it. We were both looking at it and she mentioned how she likes old Volvos. May not seem like much of a comment but coming from my wife it is. She always rolls her eyes when I point out a car I think looks nice :P

Thanks very much for the reduced price. That's going to be really difficult to pass up. We don't need to worry about bringing a mechanic. Is it possible to take it to get inspected before buying it? We're on a pretty tight budget. A few tires we could swing but if it needs anything else to get certified, I'm not sure if we could afford it. This is our first car that we'll have bought in Canada so we're pretty new at this. We lived in Japan for a few years and had a car there so I'd guess if we could figure it out in Japan we can figure it out here

Where abouts are you located? We're in the hmph he mfff hmm hermph

I really don't think it will need anything but a horn for the inspection unless you have a dishonest mechanic, (some are) I would rather just sell it the way it is rather than take it in for the safety. You will need insurance to drive it anywhere. I will give you the safety list from 2 yrs ago so you can see that. I really haven't driven much since then so I don't think anything should have to be replaced.
my telephone number is bleh-ble-bloob, give me a call later today (after work) and perhaps you may want to come out and have a look at it.

I don't think she'll be able to find out where you're located....

Every single person I know that has a (older) Volvo has said this:
Lot's of fun, and very safe. But, this thing is a damn money pit! Something is always going wrong and it's expensive to fix.

IMO, I'd find out if it's a ford produced model. If it is, STAY AWAY!!!!
    MRT
37.5 MPG, AC on, cruising at 80.
30.0 MPG, AC on, aggressively driving around 90.
27.5 MPG, no AC, cruising at 90 with occasional gridlock. 40 degrees Fahrenheit

Lots of DIY videos specifically for our car

      Ah, the old "Brick".

          "Volvo" backwards.

          It's either that or "Vulva".

            I appove of old Volvos.

I nearly bought an '88 760 Turbo wagon a couple months ago.

They are very nice and nicely equipped cars. They drive nice, and they're pretty reliable for the most part if you keep up on maintenance.

Parts are readily available and there's tons of aftermarket and DIY support for them.

The biggest problem you will probably run into is electrical problems, and on these particular 7 series Volvos, it's usually ground issues. Redo all the grounds and even add extra ones and you should have no problems.

At least it's the turbo model! I had an automatic 940GL... mechanically identical to the 740... and that thing was so slow that when I drove it off the lot at full throttle, I almost got rear-ended by a Civic! I couldn't accelerate fast enough! The transmission also had a terrible clunk, but other than that, it drove well. It never slipped or broke on me.

The build quality was fantastic, though... and the engine bay looked empty! There's SO much room to work in there!

Mine had an electrical problem, which resulted in the heat not working. I never did figure out how to fix it. Overall, though, the car wasn't all that difficult to work on. It was comfortable. The interior, paint, etc... everything cosmetic... held up after 200k miles (it was a 92, same as my CB7) WAY better than my Hondas. My Fit's interior is far more worn than that Volvo's was!

Just make sure that the horn issue is due to a faulty horn, and not an electrical issue. The electrical things are the only things that will cost you an arm and a leg if you need repairs. The mechanical stuff is quite basic, and you should be able to do most of that yourself. Those cars even have a bit of a performance aftermarket

For $800, if you need a vehicle, I'd say go for it. If it lasts you 6 months without any major issues, then you got your money's worth.

                  Oh geez! teh brick.

Well let's see. The 740/760 not too bad. Expect front-end clunks, keep an eye on water pump operation and make sure you have clean, true volvo coolant. Their slushboxes were a bit dodgy, or would be by now. Overall they're really not bad, but still be cautious.

They were used as police cruisers back in the day in Europe and I've gotta say I've always loved the V70 too.

                  life is good.
