AWD gives you a false sense of security, It's not error proof. It helps sure but I personally don't think it's worlds better than either FWD or RWD.

Now the debate between FWD and RWD in the snow. Good snow tires is key for both. I personally have had better experience with RWD cars in the snow while having bad in FWD. My integra kept getting stuck in snow with all season, my moms Volvo was decent with winters but not better than the BMW with winters. If you have an inkling of driving ability, I don't think it matters.

Now on Dry pavement, that's another story.

Also to continue on with the BMW facts, BMW first got their start as single engine airplane manufactures. Then after years of trial and error and success, they moved to land vehicles and racing.

Ever consider Jeep? They have some nice models that'll hold up in the snow and in your price range. A Grand Cherokee, Compass, SRT-8?

You're not a real Canadian until you can drive RX7s and small import 2WD trucks all winter.

Both of which I've done on a regular basis.

Of the 9 Canadian winters I've driven through, only 1 was with 4x4. All I will say is that snow tires are the best investment.

My Uncle has returned to Toronto from Florida and Dubai. He's some sort of artictechural engineer or something. He's been back here for 3 months and can't find any work. Neither could I. That's why I moved west.

But since you already have family in Ontario, it would make more sense to locate there. Just be warned the job market is incredibly tough in Ontario.

I have be looking at 5 series xi models and I'm leaning that way, I dont want 3 series and I don't really trust Audi's quality. I'm moving either to hamilton, burlington or toronto, haven't pinpoint which one yet but hamilton might win because I'm closer to my daughter. My brother been trying to talk me into getting a g35x or fx45 in awd, I like both vehicles but haven't checked pricing yet.

I will be purchasing the car in a southern state bcause I hate rust also.

i suggest you research the g35x, good cars but for your price range you would be looking at the 1st generation. oil consumption, window issue, wiper arm issues, radio/hvac issues etc, and those are just the common ones

i would not get an fx45 that fits your budget unless you know the seller personally. they go for more

overall, awd, fwd, rwd all work in the snow. the "nicer" rwd cars have electronics that help aid in snow conditions. i don't have any issues with mine being stuck. my fwd works just as well. i could drive faster and feel safer in my awd. all the drivetrain choices are available to me and i take the awd during bad weather because of the piece of mind. most would argue but how much is safety worth to you

Honestly, I'd recommend the AWD CRV. That thing is a BEAST! I typically pass people in icy snow when I'm driving it.

Also, didn't read any of the posts, so my bad if its been mentioned already.

Word of warning

Just a word of warning, in case you have not had much experience with snow.

Regardless of where you live, and regardless of how short your summer without snow is, every year people forget how to drive in it.

It sounds counterintuitive, but when it is icey out I always pay more attention to individuals driving older AWD/4WD vehicles. Mid 90's and down, these vehicles have good traction getting off the line, however they often do not have very good abs systems,or none at all, and people get a VERY false sense of security and traction.

The other fwd and rwd guys realize it is slick faster than those driving all 4 wheels.

Just my observation.
