Yeah I work at a Chevy dealership. I see Cobalts and Cavaliers in on the daily, mostly for the same thing...water pumps or brake work.
70% of each Honda today, if not more of them (at least accords like the CM I'm using as an example), are made here in the U.S. I believe Jon (visualpoet) pointed this out earlier. They come from Ohio.
I don't really consider "American" cars, American anymore. Some european cars, are still actually made there-which is nice to see. Same goes for "japanese" cars. Point is, they all have stakes in multiple countries and so it's hard to define them so strictly. But yes, many of the traditionally known "American" cars are pretty much garbage; but then again what isn't these days.
Some of the best engines (imo) are american. Most of Hondas' modern engines, such as the J30, etc. are made here too. The one that always sticks in my mind are either the Daimler Chrysler straight 6's (jeep) or the old Ford straight 6's. Nearly bulletproof engines, just keep plenty of oil in them. There's lots of Chevy trucks on the road, they hold up to a lot-better (also imo) than Ford's Triton wannabe's. Guess it's all a matter of preference and opinion. But I've had plenty of handson experience with those two straight 6's and generally speaking, they're great.
edit: Does anyone know if Geo (before the chevy days) 3 cylinder was an american engine? lol I love those things.Last edited by DJ metadelic; 01-20-2011, 09:47 AM.

My fiancee has a Nova with the 250/6 in it, around 170,000 miles. It was manufactured in 1968 (43 years ago) and has never had more done to the engine than seal and oil changes. It still is in factory spec for its compression, doesn't burn any oil (leaks some), and starts up any time you ask it to.
Ford made a "POS" engine, the 351M (not to be confused with a 351 Cleveland or Windsor), which has a reputation for running on six (of eight) cylinders at 8psi of oil pressure. For a hundred thousand miles or more with 1/4 of the cam lobes worn off. Sure, its a 5.8L motor that made a whopping 150HP (and maybe 250ft/lbs), but it WON'T DIE. Try driving an Accord around for a while with a busted oil pump and see how long it lasts.
Ford, GM, and Chrysler have all made some great engines and great cars. They've also made an incredible amount of garbage. Japanese manufacturers may have a better track record at producing quality vehicles, but they're not perfect either, they've definitely made their fair share of shit machines. Lumping all 'American' manufacturers in together and saying that all cars ever made by them suck collectively is like picking a race of people and saying that they are inferior to the better race(s) . Good job.

Geo Metro, along with its 3 cylinder engine, were Suzuki products. Every Geo was a rebadged Suzuki, Toyota, or Isuzu.
Chrysler's 2.8L V6 was garbage. The one found in the Intrepid, Concorde, etc... in the late 90s. It had a reputation for blowing up around 70,000 miles.
This thread wasn't actually serious. If you notice, there is another thread with exactly the same title that caused quite a stir... with plenty of opinions tossed around and called "facts". I let this thread stay only because I found it amusing.
