What can I store in the cold?

There's a bunch of open space above my garage, and the additions in my basement are taking their toll. List:

Instruments. I've been told to buy cases for them. What about the hardware? Lot's o metal goes with a drumset.

Weapons. Several guns and bows. I've actually had a bow out there for a while. Haven't tested it though...

Electronics. Amp that goes with the drumset. Various computer bits.

    I'll update as I remember.

Remember, Michigan. It's negative 3 right now, summer outside temps can go to 100

30.0 MPG, AC on, aggressively driving around 90.
27.5 MPG, no AC, cruising at 90 with occasional gridlock. 40 degrees Fahrenheit

thats too cold for beer! depending on alcohol content beer starts to freeze at 28 degrees (IIRC) I almost had some freeze in my car on a drive home from PA when it was about 10 degrees outside, it was cold in the trunk.

also, what instruments are you talking about? brass instruments should be fine once they dry out. woodwinds dont like to be hot or cold. I dont know about the drum kit.

      electronics don't like heat.

I wouldn't store ANY musical instrument that you don't want to get warped in extreme temperatures. I have my guitar leaning next to my window, and even that is going to be bad for it over time (it's just a $200 cheapie that I've had for 10 years, though.)

Guns may be ok, but I don't know much about them. The bow might be alright, but again, not sure. Is it wood or fiberglass?

Electronics should be fine. Just let anything that would get hot when plugged in warm up to room temperature before you power it up, or it could do damage. I leave my netbook in my car, and when I start it up in the morning, it makes some scary sounds!

          Dead body.... Just saying.

Honestly l wouldn't store anything any of that in the garage. Like Deev said instruments would get warped, Weapons maybe, Electronics can possibly get water damage or other things of that nature..

I've kept beer in my trunk when it was cold. Kept the beer cold, but not frozen.

Drum kit and hardware(Not brass). Amp, maybe electric guitars.

              Bow is fiberglass.

Cold for electronics is ok. Like you said, just let them warm up.

Guitars will warp. Warp the neck of a guitar, and it's shot. If you can't intonate it properly with a truss rod adjustment, then the guitar is useless for anything but making noise.
Amps might be ok. I'm not sure if it will damage the speakers, but I assume it won't (car speakers survive...)
Drum hardware might be ok, but the shells are wood. The metal will probably be fine.

I wouldn't store anything that is going to be affected by moisture unless you're storing them in airtight containers (preferably with dessicant in the packaging to absorb any moisture trapped when you seal them). The daily rise and fall of temperatures in a non-climate controlled area can cause condensation and corrosion on metal items, and severe warping of wooden objects. Especially in Michigan, where the temperature difference in the upper portion of a garage can rise and fall as much as 40 or more degrees between night and day depending on the insulation levels, shingle color and ambient temperature.
The fiberglass bow is iffy as well. It tends to get brittle after being subjected to heat and cold, and that's something you don't want exploding on the draw.
Even if you store electronics and let them warm up, they will probably corrode pretty quickly and be useless in no time unless they're packaged in the aforementioned airtight containers.

if im not mistaken, the perfect temperature for most beer is 32-40*F i think. you know you go to a good bar when they take empty glasses out of the freezer

depends on the beer. really dark beers can be served up to 50 degrees while the lighter colored beers it's the colder the better

                        drums would be fine.

Like i said in the other thread....get GOOD cases for them...they are usually felt lined or something like that so they don't scratch and they will be fine...clean them real good...and the next time you pull them out you will have to clean them as well.

The drum heads might not be so good so if you can store them without the heads but the drums themselves should be ok.
