In-car panorama shot CS5 vs. Auto Stitch iPhone app *pics*

i was bored the other day while waiting for my daughter to get our of preschool. so while sitting in the parking lot, i took the pics. both ways are "auto", so all i did was enter the pics taken and it spits out the result. the photoshop version did turn out better... although it should considering the comparison is between a $1.99 app and a $700 high end editing program.

of course, both programs have, in the past, turned out perfect pano shots... its just more difficult to line everything up when the shots are taken in such close proximity.

HA HA HA! I was going to be like "The iphone sucks balls!" but honestly they both had pretty poor image results on your examples.

SO I guess I cant bash apple here, another day perhaps.

The CS5 picture is vastly better, William.

I've never really liked an auto-stitch function on a camera. I'll leave it to a dedicated program to get the results I'm looking for.

i actually kinda like the iphone result better... in an abstract way. the fact that it sucks at lining up and creates this semi-transparent result is kinda cool. you can see my leg as well as the shifter behind it.

those have to be the most out-of-round steering wheels I have ever seen :P i think the iphone did a better job with lining up the angles and perspective, but the ghosting is severe though does look cool. your PS work is much more crisp (i think the gauge cluster angle is what kills it though) but like you said though at that close range the lens distortion is hard to make up for. when I take pano shots I tend to take extras in between, to use to fill in gaps or replace important sections of the "real" pics that didnt quite get captured - like having taken an extra one of the entire gauge cluster & wheel straight on, youd be golden

that is true. the way i took the pics, i basically took as few as possible while still getting everything. if i take more overlapping shots, itll probably come out cleaner. ill try it again, im sure.

although i will clean out the water bottles first

Both look terrible imo. The angle is too far off.

Clarity wise the CS5 wins, but notice how the gauge cluster is at maybe a 25 degree angle? The I phone is straight, but blurry / overlapped. There are different pros and con's to each photo. The steering wheel in the CS5 image looks like it's being squished from left to right elongating it up and down, while the I phone is exactly the opposite.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not a fan of the I-anything. In fact I hate istuff. But picture for picture, it's just different kinds of failed photos. If it's not right, then it's wrong and both of these photos are wrong.

Not too bad, then again, it's my first time doing such a thing on this app.

That last one looks good. Outdoor scenery panoramas always turn out nice. I'll shoot a couple pics with autostitch and see how it compares to the htc app
