yeah, thats a horrible comparison. the only way to make any sort of comparison would be to dual-boot fresh copies of both.

people always talk about ubuntu, theyre all basically the same darn thing when it comes down to it though. i use CentOS every day at school, and Debian (similar to ubuntu) on my web server at home... and even still, i find it hard to change over away from windows, but that is only because ive been deeply involved in MS operating systems for so many years and im accustomed to their style of interface. so when i use these other OSes and perform some action that im used to doing (double clicking a title bar... dragging a file onto a window using the right mouse button, whatever) and having the OS respond with a DIFFERENT action, lacking the choices I want, that gets horribly aggrivating. plus, everything about the OS is distributed in tiny pieces, and its up to you to make sure they all interact properly... its different... but i guess thats where Ubuntu comes in. of all of them, thats supposedly the cleanest and easiest to use as a newcomer to linux.

so if youre just using the OS to "use it" and browse around the net and just do your thing, either one works fine. but linux has many many many advantages over windows, you just have to be willing to re-learn how to use it, and perform all of your normal operations. though when you DO get it all set up and configured (and finally get accustomed to it) then it really is a pleasure...

Ya i suppose it is a horrible comparison. I fail.

But nonetheless ive found Ubuntu to boot faster more frequently then ANY windows install ive come across, to include friends/etc.

But Mike speaks the truth. It is a great platform but it takes getting used to, i certainly had to.

And no once you wipe a partition, everything on that partition is gone. So if you wipe XP and reformat with Linux over it, thats it. If you don't have an xp install cd around your stuck with Linux.

Did you go through the installation steps?

Or did you just boot up first?

If this is the first boot and it is hanging then maybe the usb is configured incorrectly.

Did you set it to boot from usb in the bios settings?

this is what i have done.

on my desktop i downloaded the netbook remix version and downloaded a virtual clone drive (dont have a blank cd at the moment) . i opened up the iso and opened up usb_creator.exe and made a boot disk. the 1st attempt froze at 88% and it said "creating persistence file".. i unplugged the flash drive and tried to boot it up but nothing.

tried making another boot disk and this time i got an "errno 22 error" after 77%
both 2 attempts took about 10 minutes before the froze.

im on my 3rd attempt at making a boot usb and this time it says 93 minutes remaining .. not sure why .

                            GOT IT TO WORK!!!

and i love it so far.. its wicked fast and i love how it looks.

one question though .. when i start up the computer it still gives me an option to boot windows , how can i run only ubuntu on the computer? i never got anything prompting me to reformat the whole hard drive.

if you didnt reformat the whole drive and windows is still there, you need to reformat the whole drive and start over.

otherwise there should be a setting somewhere that you choose to auto-select one of those choices without presenting you the option, that could help, but you still lose out on all the space windows is using up on your drive.
