    ecstatic

i know its random but im very excited so im venting this here!! bear with me...

since i was young i have always had an excitement for learning new things, especially any technical medium. it started with electronics (helping my dad build radios) and once i found legos then computers it was all over from there. robotics, mechanics, programming, game development, networking, web development. i LOVE learning about new things and figuring out creative ways to integrate them together to make something "better" or more useful. and not to pat myself on the back, but ive excelled in everything ive tried.

so one strand of that mindset has been website design, which i have been doing strictly as a hobby for 15 years now. always finding ways to learn new developments and implement them in my own way, which has been extremely rewarding for myself, but never actually had any real purpose or ability to be sold. ive tried to make money from it by designing a site as a side job for a not-for-profit group but you know how that goes. a couple years ago a friend proposed a great website idea, that we spent a long time designing and planning, but never actually made any progress in creating it. we had many great brainstorming ideas but no solid coherent product of it. by now that market is saturated with tons of competition and any serious effort would be a waste of our time, even though the idea is still good. so up until now, all my web design knowledge and experience has been pretty much wasted on making dozens of renditions of my website, the current one at http://www.****.com/ lol

so a close friend of mine who works in the field (developer) was approached by a coworker ("creative director") with an idea for a website to build. a cutting-edge website idea that has an obvious market in need (every other field has adopted it, except for our target audience, who usually are very wealthy individuals!!! ) it is a design idea that would literally sell itself, while using "cutting edge" functionality that is fully acheivable by any smart individual who is willing to do what it takes to put it together.

and thats where i come in, because thats what i have been doing for my entire life.

my friend turns him down, knowing the project is beyond his scope but he leaves him with my name and a very strong recommendation. i received an email from him this week with his proposition. apparently he was SO impressed with my email response, and based on what dave has said about me, that he knew i would be the perfect person for the job. so we met to discuss some of the details and i am THRILLED!

i have seen his work, and the creativity, simplicity, and precision really surprised me, especially considering that he approached ME as a professional peer. take a look through some of his design portfolio on his website http://www.creativemaiz.com/ just for an example. everything on there was done by himself - the wording, design, layout, production. i was really impressed. and hes made lots of money doing all of them - its just that they were individual jobs sold to specific clients, not a modular structure that can sell itself to a market.

so what this all means is, is that he found a huge market potential, and is excellent at designing the perfect way to fill that need with a solid web solution with beneficial features at an unbeatable price that makes it almost a no-brainer for clients to purchase and use it. and he wants me to have fun putting it together as a side job! and not to diminish my significance either, this will be a joint business venture with both of us being very careful and particular about our own "half" of the project but put both of us together and this should have no problem coming to fruition. hes designing and producing it, while im constructing and perfecting it. an excellent match, and to think it randomly showed up in my inbox.

i dont want to say too much about the specifics of it, but i have been itching for a meaningful way to learn how to implement modern cellphone oriented web features. if it sells once (almost guaranteed, as long as i/we deliver) then i net $3000-$5000. if it never sells, then really, no harm done, making things like this has always been an enjoyment for me. it sells once, totally worth it. it sells 5 times, its turning into a serious business venture. 20, 50, 100 times, im quitting my job HAH. and i was very impressed with his proposition that i truely believe this could easily sell itself many times over, and its creative implementation allows for it to easily grow to the magnitude of being an actual business. and its the type of thing that once one person uses it and likes it, he is within arms reach of referring it to tons of other very high level professionals (and there are thousands and thousands of those out there!) =)

i always have my ears open for opportunities to jump on like this, but never of this magnitude, and never have i been approached by somebody with this much actual experience and expertise behind him. what a confidence booster! im just very excited about its potential, im just trying not to get TOO excited! its going to take a lot of serious work on my part, of course... but thats no problem for me if im excited about it. if this takes off, im sure youll all be hearing about it!!

so yeah, back to your regularly scheduled programming...

That's awesome, Mike! So at best, you get rich. At worst, you have fun doing something you like to do anyway. Somewhere in the middle... that works too!

My advice is... get a contract. Something legally binding. Contracts have to be made while things are good, so friendships and money aren't lost when and if things go bad!

Are we going to see you rolling around in a Suzuka Blue S2000 from money you made with your side project?

absolutely, now that we are on the same page he will be contacting me with details of the plan. i have tons of things to think about with it and a number of things that i dont yet know how to do, so im going to take some time to look into things to make sure its something i can handle, but im not worried. once i decide to go for it, we are going to meet up again to discuss business and monetary details.

definitely going to be working on a contract, thats for sure. i am way too careful to not think about that end of it! my friend has worked with him for a few years and is a good judge of character, so thats reassuring. he seems very sincere, he isnt looking for some random kid to dick over, he is looking for somebody who is technologically and mentally capable to make this acually happen, as its way beyond his skills; hes an expert of design and creativity in making it appealing and beneficial to customers, not at programming websites & interfaces.

and nooooo itll be a white NSX-R lol

Just be careful. He may be an up front kinda guy... but with the kind of money you're mentioning... well, that can change anyone! I know you're happy doing it for free if nothing comes of it... but I know you won't be happy if he gets rich and you get a few peanuts tossed your way Be sure to go into it knowing exactly what you're getting out of it! Go into it holding onto the rights for any programming that you do (so he can't walk away and use your work for his own profit).

I guess that means you won't have time to be the programmer fro the CB7tuner video game, eh? (I have a design... I'm going to start getting it fleshed out soon...)
