a good "business" laptop..

any ideas?

my mom just got a mac about 6months ago. nothing in her office is a mac. it makes it difficult for her to change files between computers sometimes. she doesn't want to have to worrry about that anymore.

so what would you guys suggest as a good laptop?

Also it might be worth it to look into the new IBM Lenovo stuff...

IBM's laptop history has shown that they always build them to be USEFUL. though sometimes a little overfeatured and expensive for a "regular user" who is used to a Mac... Dells are great though, thats probably what i would get.

But the key is which dell. The consumer lines are fine but if its build quality and durability you're after definitely invest in a XPS or Latitude series. Well worth the price.

I've never had a problem transferring files between Mac and Windows

avoid mac they are high on % needing repairs list
avoid hp also high (among the highest in repairs)
avoid gateway

top ones will be:
sony
ibm
toshiba
dell is ok, not the best but still in the top.

IMO mac are good for show...as in..."ooo a new mac book...let's go hang out at the new starbucks!"
plus they are more oriented (imo) towards folks who fiddle with movie stuff...but you can get a more reliable laptop with as good or better software.

80% of the broken computers I've had to fix (hardware or software) have been Dells. I have 5 laptops in my house. 3 are broken. The one that is the most broken (and the least abused) is a Dell. Of course, the oldest one I have is also a Dell... it's old as dirt...

I'm not a fan of Dell. Never have been.

My two best laptops... the only ones I use... are both Acer. I just picked up an Acer Aspire One netbook. It's a full laptop at half the size. The only thing it doesn't have is a CD drive (too small for one). I absolutely LOVE it. It's the most convenient thing to transport. If your mom gets one of those, it could fit in her purse. No lie.

hp has a new laptop with an extra 24 hour battery option.

i'm going to save up for one. $1400+

or the new hp 8000 series with a quad core *damn* blu ray 4-8gb ram. SSD HDD (solid state drive) etc etc.. you can imagine the price on it.

If it's an intel based Mac just run VM Ware fusion or Windows. As far as a good brand i personally have always had great luck with Toshiba. Stay away from Compaq or any of the HP Branded stuff.

Im sure others will chime in.

Macs get a bad rap, but they are durable flexible computers. My fiance has had one for months now and hasnt had 1 problem. She leaves it on, runs mulltiple tabs and programs etc and it runs smooth. I have also not heard about a lot of repairs with macs. But i dont own one so thats where my expertise ends.

Hps are great fucking pcs....my friends have had them, my mom, sis, and sister in law have 3 hp laptops that work flawlessy. Ive always found Hp to be of good standings.

Gateway not so much.

How the fuck do you put Sony at the top of that list? No. never.

IBM is outstanding, always has been as far as i can remember.

Toshiba is pretty good.

To the OP-

I don't know what programs your trying to run, but if you want portability id look into the new Acer Aspire ones....very lightweight and they come with either Xp or a lightweight Linux.
