Need help finding computer programs (Windows timed shutdown, etc...)

Yeah, I'm a geek.

I'm looking for a FREE program that is reliable and easy to use. All I need it to do is shut down my computer after a certain amount of time. See, I'm downloading a Playstation game, and I'm really tired. I need to go to bed, but the download will take an hour!


I'm also looking for a program that will allow me to easily edit my startup programs (or if someone could help me do it, I could never find out how). My computer loads my scanner, 2 printers, and a bunch of other crap I don't need. I hate waiting so long!

Most laptops have battery timers. You coulud always set those if you have a laptop

i believe you can take care of that if you click on run and type in msconfig, there should be a button that allows you to choose which programs to run on start up, if not hopefully someone else can i remember i did something like what your trying to do, i think i used msconfig but not positive

Yeah msconfig will solve your startup, but for the shutdown, you can use windows schedluled tasks from the control panel,setup a new task, than go to browse, and go to your c:/windows/system32 and find the shutdown.exe. From there you than set the time and viola.

yes yes, msconfig!....i myself just unclicked them all because i dont need all that bs loading lol, i wait enough time for all my ram to load....but you can pick and choose which you want to have load on start up...i personally dont run anything on my computer and thats why it runs so SMOOTH and so quickly.

start---->run--->**type-- msconfig -- **--->click OK(and then a dialog box or something should show up)---then click on the Startup Tab---and click away at the ones you dont want to start up when you start up lol.-----click OK once again and then it will then prompt you to restart the computer....and after you boot up, you should get a box saying like, you are running something blah selective start up mod...click the check box to never show again....and WOOT!


and with the shut down thingy?...so your looking for more of a hibernate or a standby option if so......

i dont know if this works on all OS's...but if you get this far, then it does lol

right click on your desktop--->go to Properties---> click the Screen Saver tab-----and then you will see an energy saving area place i think---click on Settings---and then you should have a couple options on what you would like to have shut off at specific times...


hope that helps, if not...WHAT Operating System ARE YOU RUNNING?...it will narrow it down some more, because with the shutdown.exe its not on all OS's..

I'm running win2k (the best windows microsoft has ever pooped out). I'll have to see if I have shutdown.exe.

aww sorry mike ive been pretty busy, found a ride back home for the weekend, and my computer is still at school so im not online too much.

their suggestions were good, msconfig is the best for changing startup programs. problem is, win2k doesnt come with it, but you can get it here: http://www.techadvice.com/win2000/m/msconfig_w2k.htm if you have and know how to use hijackthis, that also allows you to remove items from the startup list.

about shutting down... why? i never turn my computer off, leaving it on the whole night wont hurt it. unless you just want it to disconnect from the net, but some clients (like some FTP ones) give you that option, "shut down PC when download is finished". what are you using to download?

sno nuff's suggestion was good. ive never used the shutdown.exe that comes with windows, and im not sure if it came with win2k, but if all else fails download this: http://www.budja.com/shutdown/ and make a scheduled task. just hope that ur download doesnt slow down, take longer than you expected, and have ur comptuer shut off before its done :P

I turn my computer off for a couple reasons... Mainly because of power usage though. My electric bill was over $100 last month, so I try to keep it down. The problem is that I have to leave my computer on all night for a download that finishes at 3am.

I usually download my big stuff with Bit Torrent, and the download times are usually fairly accurate. I would always tack on an hour to the estimate anyway, but i can be pretty sure that they will finish.
