i got robbed at work today...

i never thought it would happen to me, but it did. and it felt nothing like i imagined.

im sure many of you know that i work as a teller for a small credit union. some may remember i used to work out in the Washingtonville branch, a very home-town quiet small branch. recently ive been working at my local branch in Newburgh, its bigger and busier, but on wednesdays the manager for washingtonville is off, and they send me there to run the branch.

so i was out there today, with the two other guys who work there. it was dead quiet. nobody had come in for over an hour.

i was actually here browsing the site when i heard the door click, and i sat up, excited that somebody was coming in so i would have something to do.

and as he walked up toward me, i noticed that something was out of place when he had a hood over his head and a full face mask. walked right up to me and told me to give him the money.

he held a gun out to his side as he glanced around between each of us telling us not to move. so i calmly stacked up the money on the counter, trying to look at his face. i made sure to include the special marked bills. i stacked $5100 when he told me "thats enough" and he grabbed the stack and walked out, and took off running into the woods in the back.

i immediately locked the doors and called the police, who quickly filled the parking lot, soon followed by search dogs and helicopters. we had to stay and give statements and while they were dusting everything for prints i was helping the IT guy try to track down different sections of security video from the cameras that could be useful. we counted and proved all of the drawers for the insurance company, and then a post-crisis therapist showed up to talk to us.

all in all it was a pretty simple robbery, came in, took the money, and left. but still it was pretty exciting to be the one that he chose to come up to, in the branch that i just happened to be the manager at for the day.

im friends with the IT guy and he mentioned how hes making a copy of the security video for himself. im going to try to see if i could get ahold of a copy.

they eventually found him later in the day, apparently he also robbed a gas station in newburgh. crazy.

heres the newspaper story from the local paper: http://recordonline.com/apps/pbcs.dl.../NEWS/80604024

that's awesome but only because everyone's still alright

on the stairs, she grabs my arm, says whats up,
where you been, is something wrong?
i try to just smile, and say everything’s fine.

Well, sounds like a "lucky" robbery. Atleast he didn't put the gun to your face or anything...

Speaking of robberies, there's a guy down here robbing places in a Spider-Man mask.

i wonder if you were quick enough (like Bruce Lee), would you have been able to sock him in the face and knock him out before he could pull the trigger. I mean when turned to look at the other co-workers.

Anyways, the good thing is you coorparated and lived. I mean it would suck to be killed at work and when you haven't live past 80.

yeah, everybody is fine and none of us were really bothered by it. i dont see any reason to not just give him the money, anything else would just be putting all of us in danger and not even save us very much money. i mean i gave him mostly 1's 5's 10's and 20's... $5k is nothing for insurance.

couldnt tell, he had it kinda tucked into his sleeve. it was a fleece hoodie with wide sleeves. plus it was hard to see from behind the counter, i was focusing on getting him the money :P

well not really marked bills, but random bills that we keep track of the serial #s. so when they find him with the loot, they prove it by matching them up.

you know ive thought of that a couple times over. and i do know the camera angles and it really would of been pretty easy. there was 900 in 20's that he didnt grab. just with how scrutinizing of the video they were going to be its not worth the risk.

glad to hear no one was hurt or anything. that's the only thing i fear at the bank where i work. it was actually robbed the week before i started there in September.

there've been tons of bank robberies around my area. i'm surprised they even brought a gun. all you really need is a big sweater, and a piece of paper saying you have a gun or something. if that ever happens, we technically HAVE to give over cash because we can't determine if they do have something.

I work for a local police station and the surrounding banks now have special strapped bills with a tiny tracker inside of it and dispatch can see where you are no matter how far away for as long as the battery last which I think is a few days. You wouldn't be able to tell unless you actually unstrapped all the bills
