i never thought it would happen to me, but it did. and it felt nothing like i imagined.
im sure many of you know that i work as a teller for a small credit union. some may remember i used to work out in the Washingtonville branch, a very home-town quiet small branch. recently ive been working at my local branch in Newburgh, its bigger and busier, but on wednesdays the manager for washingtonville is off, and they send me there to run the branch.
so i was out there today, with the two other guys who work there. it was dead quiet. nobody had come in for over an hour.
i was actually here browsing the site when i heard the door click, and i sat up, excited that somebody was coming in so i would have something to do.
and as he walked up toward me, i noticed that something was out of place when he had a hood over his head and a full face mask. walked right up to me and told me to give him the money.
he held a gun out to his side as he glanced around between each of us telling us not to move. so i calmly stacked up the money on the counter, trying to look at his face. i made sure to include the special marked bills. i stacked $5100 when he told me "thats enough" and he grabbed the stack and walked out, and took off running into the woods in the back.
i immediately locked the doors and called the police, who quickly filled the parking lot, soon followed by search dogs and helicopters. we had to stay and give statements and while they were dusting everything for prints i was helping the IT guy try to track down different sections of security video from the cameras that could be useful. we counted and proved all of the drawers for the insurance company, and then a post-crisis therapist showed up to talk to us.
all in all it was a pretty simple robbery, came in, took the money, and left. but still it was pretty exciting to be the one that he chose to come up to, in the branch that i just happened to be the manager at for the day.
im friends with the IT guy and he mentioned how hes making a copy of the security video for himself. im going to try to see if i could get ahold of a copy.
they eventually found him later in the day, apparently he also robbed a gas station in newburgh. crazy.
heres the newspaper story from the local paper: http://recordonline.com/apps/pbcs.dl.../NEWS/80604024
