I need to replace the shift cable in a 92 Honda Accord EX coupe AUTO. The cable keeps binding and is hard to get out of park. I haven't been able to find a DIY on it, so any help would be appreciated. Is this not a DIY job? I see that the cable comes out of the car and into the bottom of the tranny...does this mean that I'm going to have to tear apart part of the transmission to get to it? Am I better off just buying a new cable and having a shop do the replacement? Thanks.

How do I replace the shift cable?

You have to take apart your centre console.
Remove the gear selector.
Unhook it from there.
Raise the car on a lift or something.
Take off the 4 bolts holding a blocking plate right under the gear selector but ffrom underneath the car. Bend the heatshield out of the way.
Then take off i think 4 more bolts that connects the cable to the tranny. The plate should come off then...
That was just information off the top of the head.
But they are basic enough that you should have no problem with it.

I'm still sort of confused. I looked in the shop manual I have and couldn't find that. Anyways, am I still going to be tearing apart a little bit of the transmission? Those directions with the pictures are kind of confusing. But I'm kinda guessing if I just look at it logically I will figure out what needs to be removed?Quote:

I know the pic is really small, but does that look like it will work? Does anyone know where I could find a shifter cable from? Anywhere else online? Price isn't really a problem.

cable is easy to replace...
look under the car, see where it goes into the tranny? theres a cover plate that you can pull off from around it, theres three 12mm bolts (the only 12's in the immediate area). thatll reveal where the linkage meets the tranny. shift the shifter back into a middle position, maybe d3 or d4, and look under the tranny again - theres a 10mm screw holding the cable to the shaft, but theres a flat tab against it. fold the tab back out of the way and remove the screw, then you can pull the cable completely off of the tranny. remove any cable guides (mine didnt have any), then you can see where it goes up behind the exhaust heat shield... 10mm nuts hold the heat shield on, but you may need to remove part of the exhaust, or at least pop the rubber hangers off to make it lower... but up behind there, theres two 10mm bolts holding the plate that seals the connection where the cables actually pass into the car. once you get those out, its only held onto the shifter by the two bolts and the lock pin.
that ebay auction sounds like its the right one, but i cant really see the picture either.

Ok question...i found this cable that looks like the one in the diagram. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/90-93...spagenameZWDVW
The one I found previously looks different(look at the large metal piece)? I'm just curious as to which one is the right one. Thanks!Quote:
