    Recommend... a camera...

My little Fujifilm finally died on me, and I'm not too sad about it... although I def. won't drop the next one as much.

I'm looking for something that will let me play with settings like the focus, exposure time, ISO, whatever. There are a few cool regular digital cameras like the Powershot G5... but my dad has a Nikon G50 and it's great.

What do you guys think? For someone who basically takes pics of cars and him and his friends at bars, as well as random shots of NYC, what would be better? A decent regular digicam or an SLR? I don't wanna spend more than $500.

Nikon's hands down. I have an older model, the Coolpix 4500 and I just love it. I was really into photography in highschool and really loved the control a full manual camera afforded, so this Nikon was perfect in that you can control everything......EVERYTHING!

It has the handy no-brainer setting for when you just want snapshots of friends and such, but for taking wicked awesome cool night shots, landscapes and most importantly car portraits, it takes the cake for control.

I was just in Brooklyn/Manhattan last week and I took some alright nightshots. Here's one I took full manual with the Nikon from the top of a 30 storey building in Brooklyn Heights

I have to vouch for Canon, ive been using them solely and ahve never let me down. Id say there are two major players, Canon and Nikon in the DSLR market, not talking professional.

You should take a look at used DSLR, lets say the first Rebel, look around at used camera shops and craigslist, you may be surprised!

and yes I am a Canon brand whore.

What are you looking to spend? That's always a good starting point. For a non-SLR I'd suggest a Canon S3 IS.

Canon EOS if you have the money. Anyway it depends on what its gonna be used for and what you plan on spending. Its pointless to buy a 600 dollar camera and just take a few pictures with it.

canon hands down just stick with the powershot s3 kinda pricey but the pics it can take is really nice. u have basic functions similar to the rebel. if you want to go lil bit up get the rebel. but for the purpose of point and shoot the s3 is the best of the best.

In the past 3.5 years I've taken about 500 pictures... and I'd have taken more if I had a better camera.

I was thinking about the Canon S3. My budget is about 350-500, but really, I want the least expensive fully manual digital camera I can get. I like the low response time and versatility of SLRs though... I think I'm set on a DSLR.

actually for 500 bucks you can get a nikon d50 with a lense now. the prices have dropped a lot since the d80 came out and recently the d40. i suggest you check out an ebay seller called cameta camera. i did some research on them and they are legit. great deals on dslrs and others. thats where ill be buying by d50 from. actually is you want to make a trip they actually have an actual store somewhere on long island. chack them out. i think for the price it does not get better than a d50. just make sure you get the pacage with the dx 18-55mm kit lense since some of ther pacages include older manual lenses.

Alright so I've been looking... and I figured out what I need. ALL I NEED is a camera w/at least 6MP resolution, and a lens that lets me MANUALLY control the zoom and focus. I'm thinking either the Fujifilm Finepix S6000fd or the Canon Powershot S3 IS. For basically an amateur photographer, would these be adequate?

A 6mp resolution is more than adequate for any amateur photographer.

I would go with the Powershot. The Fujifilm cams are slightly easier to use, but the features, the reputation and build quality of the Canons are second to none.

I have a Sony Cybershot DSC-W70. 7.2mp, small, large display, great on battery life, and the pictures are outstanding. With a decent sized Memory Stick Duo, the cost would be about $350. I got mine for my birthday, since I need a camera for work (and my old one SUCKS). That was over a month ago, and I'm still impressed by this thing!

Aside from the little zoom toggle, it doesn't have much of a manual control, though...

You should contact Cokinut to see if he has any old cameras to sell... he always had the top quality stuff!

I have a canon powershot S2IS and I love it. 5mp 12x optical zoom, and they are upgraded to 6.1 mp now for the same model. Powershots are great; easy to use, not too expensive, and are great quality. Definately recommended if you don't want to spend a ton on a Nikon or something professional.

                          Canon>Nikon

just personal preference tho ive used both the d70, d70s and rebel, rebel xt, and a few of the higher end like the 5d and a 1dmk2 and the white balancing on in auto modes on the canons were better in every instance and also the ease of setting control was far better with the canon...

my father has one of the higher end p&s Nikons and its really nice... however my 3 year old A95 kept up with it quite well and those have manual focus and manual shutter control and f-stop control... and can be had for relatively cheap and its 5.0 mp which is plenty for almost anything.... id say look at the canon powershot A710 its around 350 or so and has lots of functions and 7mp

hope this helps a little bit...

I personally recommend canon, I have right now a canon powershot a550 and its 7. mp and it shoots great pics with good manual settings. It cost me about 250 with a 1gb sd card. When I have more money I like to move up to a rebel xt. As for the canon is3 I have read nothing but great reviews and has great manual settings. The price may be high but the quality is well worth it. Hope i help out in any way. You may want to check out this website and see the different pics that are taken with canon cameras
