Go to a store and try out DSLR's from Canon, Nikon, Sony, Olympus?,...
Then go on craigslist, ebay, or photo forums and search for used gear of the brand that you like the setup of better.
I prefer Canon's system of functions and lens/accesories.
The biggest regret I have when it comes to photography is buying my Xti kit brand new in June 08' for way too much money.
Dont make the same mistake that I did.

      t1i...full price.

1100 out the door, but i couldnt wait for it to be shipped from some whore bag on ebay.

that of course was with other shit too, but still retarded.

I have found that people outgrow the d40 very quickly. Now the d90 is another story.

Also consider on-line stores like bhphotovideo.com and adorama.com. Both Have used equipment sections with great prices and are great places to get used stuff with piece of mind that you are not getting scammed with bad equipment. As an example I just picked up a Nikon D200 from BH for under $700 to use as my backup body.

                      I just found a lightly used 30d for $400.
There are deals out there, you just have to find them.

I have bought all of my gear from either amazon.com, ebay.com, or http://www.photography-on-the.net/forum.

I would be hesitant to use craigslist, but I have sold good gear on there.

I have had great success with potn.com, even some Nikon stuff. Be careful though, it will go fast. I have seen items sell in less than 5 minutes on there.

I just bought a D200 body the other day on ebay for 650 in great condition with only 7400 shutter actuations. Check ebay daily as well your local craigslist. I think last week BHPHOTO used equipment department had a D200 body for 680 with 30 day warranty. Just need to keep on checking as they get snatched pretty quick. Adorama.com also has a used equipment department so check there too. Good luck you will like the D200 as its quite a step up from the D40.
