    My D40 pics thread....

    Hey yall....

Just got myself a Nikon D40 & 18-55 AF-S Lens Kit (I know, not the best choice, but a great quality unit for the price) Definitely an upgrade from my Samsung 3.2mp Point and Shoot.

I'll post my first pics in a few... didn't come out too great, as I'm rusty at SLR shooting (been about 8 years since I've shot)

Any suggestions on lenses and filters? I don't mind if the lenses aren't auto-focusing, I just want something that yields great picture quality. I also want a fish-eye lens for car photoshoots.

    Thanks for the input.

    fail?

d40 isnt a bad choice for the money unless you paid retail. i have one and im pleased with it. just keep taking pictures and learn how to use the camera and what type of photos you take will determine the lens that best fit you.

A UV Filter is always a nice thing to pick up since it will protect that frontal lens. Its like a bumper for your car. Useful stuff and it doesnt hinder image quality which is good. But all in all read the manual thats the most important thing to read. Here is a site to give you an idea on lens and what pictures they can do this should help you quite a bit on your lens selection as it did mine.

thanks!!!! good site! I was looking through the pics taken with a D40, and they all look absolutely amazing!!! I guess this camera has more potential than I thought.

Paid Wal-Mart price for the D40 kit, which isn't too bad. Probably the cheapest DSLR+Lens available.

Gonna order a few filters on ebay, seeing how cheap they are.

If I can find them for cheap here in town, I'll pick some up today.

D40 is a great camera. like nail05 said get a uv filter for every lens you own. easier to replace a filter than a lens if you scratch or break the glass. as far as lenses go the first one i suggest is the 50mm f1.8 lens - very sharp and fast lens. its a bargain. i got mine for about 60 dollars. the next one i would get is a 55-200mm VR lens. again sharp with image stabilization that wont put a dent in your pocket. i paid about 260 for mine.

as far as getting filters and lenses or any accessories for that matter check out adorama.com and bhphotovideo.com. Great prices and awesome customer service.

just picked up a UV filter locally for $15

gonna order the polarizing filter on ebay as its about 1/4 the cost online than locally.

going to shoot pics in a couple hours. we'll see how it goes.

keep in mind that ultimately the lens holds the real power of the quality images that is produced. a rule on the photography forum goes around saying that if your not doing it (photography) professionally do not invest on an expensive body rather just invest in lens.

either way hope to see your pix soon, a favor i will ask though is don't over do your post processing.

EDIT: and yes don't cheap out on stuff cus with dslr's it shows

I'm hoping that with this camera I wont need to post-process much at all, unlike with my old cam. hopping in the shower now, and heading out to get some desert shots

Mitsubishi what? lol anyway I forgot to recommend Hoya is a good brand of filter and pretty cheap too. There are other expensive ones out there too. I have a polarizer and UV filter from them good stuff.

anyways, yeah... I was just looking at Hoya filters. Damn cheap!!!!

I'll get all the filters available when I get paid on Friday.

I was also looking at Sigma lenses. Good bang for the buck, and the pictures I've seen taken with them are outstanding!

don't get all the filters available. only buy what you need otherwise id be a complete waste. sigma makes good lenses however just like canon lens theres cheap and expensive variations. you usually get what you pay for with lens. id recomend the canon 50mm as a first set of lens its only 100 bux or so and the glass is very very sharp and colors can be very vibrant

I know those last couple of cb7 pics are a bit underexposed, but i thought they came out decent, regardless. I wasn't using a tripod for any of the images.
