Nikon D40 or Canon Rebel XT

Ok so I have been saving for a new camera and I have been looking at the Nikon D40, I would like to get everyones opinions on the camera and its kit lens. (18-55mm f/3.5 - f/5.6 ED II AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor lens)

I would also be interested in opinions on the Canon Rebel XT with its kit lens.(Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 USM zoom lens).
