0-98 MPH run - soon to be retired F22A4

This vid shows why I'm putting in a new motor sometime this week/weekend.
It was made about a month ago and the problem has gotten worse since then. The motor has just hit 300k and it's a little worn out at this point. The valve springs are getting weaker everyday that I drive it and I'm starting to get some bad valve float at high RPM's. In the vid the float becomes aparent right around 6k and now it's currently floating at about 5k. You gotta have the volume on to hear it. First is hard to tell, but it becomes real clear in second and worse in third. The higher the engine load the worse they float. A few months ago this was a 15 sec. car which isn't bad considering the mileage and the fact that my only power adders are an intake and a beefier coil. I could not get it lower than 16.2 at the track two weekends ago. It seems like a misfire but I've eliminated that possibility. Sorry the footage sucks...it's a pain to hold the camera, steer and shift at the same time. Anyways, here's the vid:

    0-100 run w/misfiring vid:

This vid was taken AFTER the 0-100 MPH run. It shows that the car can and will hit high RPM’s and rev up to rev-limit (6.8k) without any misfiring, valve float or any issues of any kind:

I've done some testing and here's some results:

    Compression test results:

For the first pass I just pulled the plugs, pulled fuel pump fuse, lodged the throttle open and cranked each cyl for 8 compression strokes.

Factory specs. - minimum of 135psi and a standard of 178psi

    cyl.1---cyl.2---cyl.3---cyl.4
    151----162----171----182

Altough cyl.1 is a little low, it is still within OEM spec. All 4 cyls, built up pressure quickly on the first stroke and continued to rise evenly for each stroke after that.

For the second pass, I poured about 50-75ml of oil into each cyl before testing and then cranked them for 8 compression strokes each. The new results:

    cyl.1---cyl.2---cyl.3---cyl.4
    190----230----213----245

That basically tells me that the piston rings are shot on all 4 cyls. which I knew that. The motor started burning and consuming a little bit of oil about 100k miles ago so this one is no big suprise. It also looks like there may be some carbon deposits in cyls 2-4 resulting in the increased compression.

    Valve Adjustment:

Well, I was a little concerned about Cyl.1 (possibly a worn cam lobe) so I went ahead and pulled the valve cover off and did a thorough visual inspection of the cam lobes on all cyls and particularly cyl.1. Everything looked good. While the cover was off, I went ahead and did a valve adjustment as well. Factory spec is .002-.003in Most read right around .003-.005. The worst one was at .013 and that was the first intake valve on cyl.4. This wouldn't cause the mis that's happening but I figured I might as well check everything and set it to spec just so that I KNOW it's set right. Also, I looked at valvetrain movement as the crank was turned for each cyl. and it appears to be working exactly as it should.

    Cam/Crank Timing:

Well, cam/crank timing and the timing belt are perfect. It could have been possible that the timing belt jumping a tooth could cause the misfire that's happening at high RPM but I checked them and they're perfect. With the timing mark on the flywheel alligned, the cam is perfectly at 0 deg.

    Ignition Timing:

I set the timing AGAIN. It is curerently at +15 @TDC and that's within factory spec.

Plus I've checked all the basics and everything is checking out perfect. It's very apparent that this motor isn't gonna last very much longer. It is getting changed any day now. Check back here in about a week for the "motor blowing ceremony" vid to see this motor gettin blown up

What can I say, I've always been rough on my toys

I know I abuse my shit, but I also keep the maintainence up. I pop the hood pretty much everyday and just kinda check it out. I take just as good care of it as I do abuse it which is why it has 300k hard driven mile on it and is still running.

Whats up with this? Do most people NOT drive around shifting close to or at 6.5k regularly? Me I am CONSTANTLY excited about coming to a stop...because I know exactly what comes next....Vrrooooooom! Sckeet! Vrooom!
With my healthy CB7 thats maintained well not take this? If so some1 pm me and let me KNOW!

Yes sir Even checked the resistance of the plug wires, plugs, cap, rotor and other items not usually tested.

NO, most people do not abuse their motors as much as I do. Most people are too scared to even take it to revlimit. You should be fine taking it up to 6.5k+ but it really depends on the condition of your motor and if your timing and other crucial aspects are set correctly. I really shouldn't be revvin this one up as much as I do and deff. not as often as I do, but I personally don't care if it blows.

Damn now I see what a good clutch can do for our Accords...

And yeah I hear what you're talking about, I dunno if that's abnormal...my car has an intake and it also makes those marbles in a bag rattling sounds at higher revs...I think it might be because our engines are just not made for that kind of consistent high-revving.

I must say though I am thoroughly impressed by your chirps...my clutch is so dead I can't do a regular burnout, let alone chirp into 2nd, esp. during the summer! Damn man...

Anyone know how hard the clutch install is?

yeah man what kind of clutch do you have, cause ive only chirped 2nd 2 times, i mean i dont try to do it cause its hard on the clutch, but my friend can do it in my car, maybe its driving style as well. I rev to 6.2k or whatever redline depending on my mood and where im driving, i guess our cars can take it if you maintain them meticously, however they still have a lifespan. Really it comes down to what you want to do, keep your engine forever or have some fun.

Be careful not to rape a bearing with those kind of revs. The f22a valves start to float around 6.5k so be carefull

do you think its possible your not gettin enough fuel at those high of rpms?

Wow, I haven't checked this forum in forever!

The motor has been retired and went out with a big bang. I've got the F22B1 under the hood now.

I checked everything and it came down to the valve springs. I got the B1 motor/trans for less than it would have cost to put new valve springs in so it's all good. The old F22 had over 300k miles on it. The valve float issues didn't become noticable until about 280k hard driven miles.

The clutch in those vids is clutchmaster stage 2. Even with the OE one you can spin the tires. Hell, you can spin them in 3rd and 4th if you really wanted to with a factory motor. No success spinning 5th yet but I'm sure one day it'll happen.

i still dont see why people rev that high...the power peak is at 5200 rpm...after that, the power just drops off, you would be better off to just upshift, and get back in the strong part of the powerband in the next gear...

In 1st and 2nd it's best to go to redline...at the end of those gears you pull harder than you do at the same speeds in the next gear, if you follow what I'm saying. Later on though it's better to shift early and keep the engine in its powerband.
