        my guess is from the detonations that goes on in there while the engine is running. Every time the piston reaches the top there is an explosion and thats what causes the black residue over time. correct me if im wrong I would have cleaned them off but mad probs to the guys for doin such a kick ass job over night

          thats the thing though,, on my old dx when we did a valve job the piston heard didn't look that way. there where brighter and that dx burned oil still the piston heads looked brighter....
          even when i did the head gasket job on the current engine it didn't look that dark.

            an easy way to do ah headgasket without messing with the timing is to unbolt the cam gear and tie it up with the tbelt still on it
