    welder knowledge here

hey guys, i just found this sub forum lol. anyways, if any of you have any welding or sheetmetal questions i am a fully certified welder and have been a sheetmetal worker for the past 4 years, so pretty much i can answer any of your questions regarding metal

*DISCLAIMER* - While i am qualified in pretty much all areas of welding my knowledge of each type varies based on the amount i use it. For example, i use SMAE (shielded metal arc welding) or stick welding the most. second would be MIG, then TIG (most beautiful welds IMO) , then things like carbon arcing, torch usage in cuttingand heating (including propane and MAPP gas), plasma cutting etc.... so I cant promise to know it all

well, cheaper for one. i can get any rod metal all day long at work for free, as opposed to paying for wire. also, as far as steel goes its just easier to hook up and spot tack, without taking apart the mig gun. the one problem i have is with wire feeders, they're unreliable as shit. some things i have no choice, like exhaust piping for example. i really use tig over anything, to me tig is a beautiful weld, its just so damn time consuming. if its something that will be seen i like to use tig. and of course if its aluminum. otherwise if i can i prefer arc.

Depends on the metal.. For .120 DOM, you're probably looking at $2.50-$3 per foot. Of course, I haven't checked prices in a couple months, so it may be more now.

You'll have instant failular with arc, mig is your only option between the two. The reason for this is the heat area around the spot your welding is far greater with the arc as oppose to mig, which leads to burning holes and warping the sheet metal. Be sure to get a lot of practice "tacking" thin sheet metal together before you do the actual job(it would make things easier in the long run and I know you don't wanna mess this up!).
