EXT:flip flop trunk

Materials Needed:
(2) 3-inch latches, regular size latches will work fine, heavy duty ones just make for more work no need to kill your self.
(2) Triangular hinges
(Approx. 15) Tapered head screws, the ones that could be flushed into the hinges.


1. With trunk open, mark the trunk lid at the top of the stock brackets.

2. Remove your trunk lid slowly by unbolting about 4 bolts. Please do not remove the stock brackets, only the trunk lid.

3. Attach the flat side of the enclosed hinge to trunk lid below the mark, with the bottom of the hinge facing down.
4. Next you will have to bend hinges. Take the 2 hinges and bend one side at a 90-degree angle.

5. With help reattach trunk lid to stock brackets using curved hinge. Be sure to pre-drill all holes before mounting new hinge. This hinge will create the fold down effect.

6. Connect latches about 2 inches from the bottom of the trunk lid. Be sure they are mounted on the inside of the stock brackets.

7. Mark a spot on the stock bracket to drill to allow the latches to latch. Be sure the latch will latch tightly. If it doesn't latch tightly you may have to replace the stock bottom bolts each time you want to fold down your trunk lid.

(optional: a prop rod maybe needed I plane on using hood shocks just havent got around to it yet)

I can dig this. However:

1. How about some pics of the parts you're talking about. I have no idea what a 3-inch or triangular hinge is, and I spend my life in ACE hardware.

2. This pop-trunk design means you have to hold the trunk as it opens, and then position it in its "pop trunk" looking position? Or can you just pull the lever and it automatically adjusts its attitude and angle as it rises?

sorry if i was not clear its a 3" light strap hinge ive got a pic othe one on the car but its already bent but youll get the idea and the latches are 3" barrel bolts

the trunk opens like it would if it was still factory you have to unlock the barrel bolts to flip it and for now you might want a prop rod im working on a way to put shocks on it so itll open in the flip position

I dont really like it that much, just doesnt look like a professional job, id rather save up and buy the kit they make for that.. but nice diy tho

im open to any suggestions on a better hinge or any kinda improvements that would make it better and the hinges and bolts will be painted rosewood brown to match the car just havent got around to doing it yet please tell me anything that would make it better

deffinately better to mount the hinge both on the same side of the rail makes for a cleaner look or better yet weld in a flat hinge i had originally started to do it that way the decided to buy flat 1 inch wide 3 inch long hinges and prolly weld them in it looks really clean also instead of that latch a spring loaded latch works great

i tried but didnt turn out so well...i did my hinges a little different and go it to flip right..but i couldnt get it to stop..the weight wasnt balanced enough for it to even out, cause i dont like the whole prop idea, id rather have it sit there on its own...i am going to tinker with it some more this summer when i get time

What you are missing that makes the lid fold allll the way down is a chain. What I did was drill a hole in the middle of the arm about the middle of where it curves down from the trunk lid and adjusted two chains to hook on to the rearmost hole in the trunklid (nearest back to the windshield) until it floats level. Yours is a 'flip flop' lid but that's not what it's supposed to be or even what it's actually called. It's a flip trunk. Like a Flip hood (reverse open like a corvette). I've seen on different cars where they had an actually guiding system that made it automatically open correctly. I did not bother doing the side 'locks' on mine because I couldn't get it to hold strong enough and the lid starts to pop open (not a good thing!). I used the same hinge as in the pictures about but the hinge on the arm is on the opossite side of the arm and the other half is also reverse of how you did it. Not to thick so with the one bottom stock bolt it holds 100% normal and solid. Not bad because you mess with the car less and it's not something you are doing at every stoplight...

I did that on my old prelude and all I can say is Welcome to Bass Rattle Extreme. If you have a system in your POV your trunk is gonna rattle like crazy.

If it rattles any more than before something isn't right... my system didn't make it rattle only the license plate rattle a bit as it had before. Your hinge wasn't on there very solidly or else the lid may not have been positioned right causing it to seal properly. Also I kept my botton two stock bolts on which really helps keep it solid(no pun intended )

A little more descriptive to help those attempting to do this mod. I used the instructions below with some pictures that I have somewhere. I have since sold the POV that I did this mod to.

These are the instructions on how to modify your trunk to flip down. This will
allow you to open your trunk in two ways: the normal way and the flip down
way.

Materials:
2 - 2" Slide Bolts (Latches)
2 - 3” Strap Hinges
Drill with small bit (1/16” to 1/8” depending on the size of the screws) to predrill
screw holes and a large bit (5/16” or 3/8”) to drill for the latches in Step
#6
Phillips screwdriver (the screws should come with the hardware)

Instructions:
1. Remove your trunk lid by unbolting 4 bolts. Do not remove the stock
brackets, only the trunk lid. You may have to remove some wiring also.
Just remember where everything plugs back in. This part will take 2
people.

2. Attach one side of the hinge to the side of the bracket that was
connected to the trunk with the hinge facing away from the trunk.
Repeat on the other side. Make sure to pre-drill your holes.
3. With help reconnect the trunk to the brackets using only the bottom
bolts (the top ones won’t go in because the hinge is covering the hole for
them).
4. With the trunk in place, pre-drill and screw in the screws for the
other side of the hinges. You may have to bend the hinges slightly to
get them to fit right. A little pressure or a small hammer will do the
trick.
5. Connect the latches about 2 inches from the bottom of where the
brackets touch the trunk lid. Be sure they are mounted on the inside of
the brackets.
6. Mark a spot on the stock bracket to drill a hole to allow the latches
to latch (this is where the big drill bit comes in). You may have to
remove the bottom bolts to drill so you don’t damage them if you ever
want to put it back to stock. Be sure the latches will close tightly. If they
don't you may have to replace the bottom bolts each time you want to
fold down your trunk lid. (If you don’t plan on using this trick too often,
you can skip the latches and just replace the bottom bolt anyway. This
will keep it very secure but still let you use it when you really want to.)
7. Once you have the latches on, you can remove the bottom bolts if
you haven’t already and flip the trunk down. The hinges will let the
trunk fold down to level, but not any farther. To close the trunk flip it
up, slide the latches into the holes you drilled in step #6, and close the
trunk normally.
8. If you have some subwoofers in the trunk, you might want to put
some foam tape along the stock brackets to keep the trunk from rattling
against them.
9. If at any time you want to put it back to stock, you can just remove
the hardware and replace the bolts. There will only be a few small holes
showing.
