EXT: extend lip for wagon

i recently got my vision lip from jack lee.

the lip came cut in half which was convenient for me since i have to extend it to make it match my wagon bumper.
for those who don't know. the wagon bumper it slightly wider from the bottom than the sedan and coupes.

this was my finished product



so im gonna show you how to extend the lip.
this is also good for those who want to connect the lips back together when you get them shipped from over seas, cutting lips ships the lips faster and cheaper.

ok so lets get started

what you'll need
--a paint brush
--a fiberglass repair kit
--600 grit sand paper
--1000 grit sand paper
--and bondo body filler


all in all i spent 24 bucks (aside from the lip)

STEP 1

determine how much you are gonna have to extend the lip by mounting it to the bumper and making sure its perfectly flush wit the edge of your bumper.

this is obviously not the case if you are just putting the lip back together on a regular sedan or coupe bumper



as you can see, now that its mounted properly i can tell that im gonna need to add about an inch to the lip.

STEP 2

grab your fiberglass repair kit


begin to mix the solutions as indicated in the box



now dip the fiberglass in the solution and begin to shape it on the back of the lip with your brush.


this is how it should look like, make sure the fiberglass matches the same curves of the lip, don't leave bubbles
add as much layers of fiberglass as you can, the more the better it will be reinforced.

STEP 3

once the fiber glass is dry its time to start working on the front of the lip.

unfortunately i didn't take pics of this process cause i got carried away and finished it without taking pics

what you wanna do is place the bondo body filer on the front side of the lip (follow the indication in the box)

let it dry for at least 30 mins or use a heat gun to harden it faster

STEP 4

once harden, begin to sand it down, sand the body filler into shape to make it match the lip, use the 600 grit to sand it down fast

once you have the the body filler sanded down you shouldn't see any bumps.
try to run your finger across the lip to see if the bondo is flush with the lip, if so then grab your 1000 grit sand paper and start sanding it down to smooth out the surface of the bondo, this will help hide any scratches made from the 600 grit sand paper, and while you are at it, sand down the whole lip to help the paint stick

FINALLY

if you have done the job right the all you need to do is paint it and mount it back on your bumper and you r good to go

Instead of using body filler, I would have used Marglass. It is much stronger than body filler because it has strands of fiber glass in it. It came out nice though!

Sweet. That's a 1991 cb9 bumper.. only came that yr.. actually my #1 fav bumper for the cb. I'm currently lookin for another 1 :/ . I already have the fogs for it. Tho edm fogs r much bigger and are glass. Now paint the side skirts and paint a cd5 rear bumper for that car
