I just had to do this the other day when I tried to leave my shop. A new relay where im at is about $60 from AutoJunk so I just took the one out of my derby car so I could get home to resolder the old one then stick it in the derby car. Works great now thanks to this DIY and both cars run again.

        Its bolted in

Main relays hardly go bad, they just fail at the solder joints

Please if you are going to resolder it make sure you know what you are doing

i tried to repair one the other day and it was previously repaired/covered in globs of solder, it was a mess.

Bumping this up cause if it wasn't for this DIY right here I wouldn't have a clue on how to do it.

I just took out the main relay on the cb9 and swapped it with the bad one on my white cb7. My white cb7 started right up after I installed it!!

It sure was a hell of a lot easier to take it out on the AUTO cb7 then the MANUAL cb9 that's for damn sure! lol! There was no clutch pedal poking me in the head.

Great DIY and its spot on, on what to do!

Hey..don't thank me...thank the person that made it. All I did was what everyone should do but don't...I searched the word RELAY,found it, read it, and then put it in my bookmarks to read it again or cause I'm nice, I pass it along. It's a lot easier sometimes than bitching at people to look for themselves. Sometimes.

Bumping this, because I used this DIY today to repair my neighbour's main relay on his 92 EX which has an intermittent starting problem that a new dizzy didn't correct.

              Fantastic write up, OP.

Great write up Kane. I have been needing to replace this relay for as long as I can remember. There has been a new one sitting in my glove box for the longest time. It's only an issue when the weather climbs above 80 degrees. It's great knowing exactly what to look for.

Thanks Carlos. Ever since I re-soldered mine, I've had no more problems with it.

I have DIY in my bookmarks and share it all the time. Thanks! Just a funny note for all of you that don't believe that changing the main relay is the fix:
Back in 07, I got the 91 coupe from a friend. The car had been parked for a long time under the Southern California heat. So we had to tow it to my house when I bought it and it didn't start. Previous owner paid to try to get it running by changing the distributor 3 times, starter 2 times. Then he took it to another guy and I was with them. I said "check the main relay" and the idiots popped the hood. I quickly got it towed home....saw this DIY and changed it. Started up in a second! That was in 2007 and it's now still working in 2013..wow!

and this coupe has gone through so much and still looks like shit cause nobody will help with the body work that lives near. Our member out near Palm Springs did a head gasket and it had numerous engine works.....but the main relay I put in...it's still there. (and NOT under the hood....)

Just replaced my main relay. It's hot today. After 20 minutes of driving, and after turning off the car for a couple of minutes, I went to turn her back on. Like usual when the weather warms up, she fired up and then bogged out. I figured it was a great time to actually put you info into good use. I'm still going to re-solder and open up some vent holes then throw it in the glove as a back up. Thanks again Kane.

                            BUMP, TTT

Pay attention it is hot out and no one is searching for how to fix non-start situations.

Hopefully by bumping this we will get less "it's hot and my car won't start" threads.

Well summer may be over here now in the UK but the main relay still has the last laugh!

Had the car off the road for like a month, doing some upgrades etc, finally got to drive the car again. 2nd day of driving, classic symptoms of main relay has struck!

Great DIY Shall be doing exactly this at the weekend thanks!

Before the Great CB7 crash that shook the world...I copied and bookmarked some DIY's for myself knowing it would be easier than doing a search all the time. I have helped with this particular question so many times! I should get paid and I'll make a fortune each time. Unfortunately I think what's posted is property of this site unless the author says ok. So use the search (or should I charge? hahah)
