This could be great by drilling the hole you need to do to put a CAI. I have a SRI and i've drille some hole where the tube of the CAI supose to go and it's more fresh. The pipe become less hot after a long trip

thank you everyone for your support, i appreciate it. about the pipe, that is just a temporary fix. i started college at the University of Missouri-Rolla and i am working on the formula SAE team ( link ) and we have access to all the free pre-preg carbon from Boeing and i plan on making an intake, along with some other things out of extremely light dry carbon (light as is 20 pounds for ALL the composite panels on the SAE car; nose, side panels, side pods, undertray, front and rear wings, diffuser, and seat!). if that doesnt work, i will just bend and weld my own.

Ever think of sealing up that box and running a tube down to the fender to get some fresh air in?

everything i make is in a constant state of evolution. i will probably seal the box off, make it out of dry carbon, and possibly vent the hood just above to create a "ram-air" effect. that would be my only hood mod making it just aggressive enough for my taste.

              i have a suggestion.

For the air duct being as restrictive as the original plastic piping, is there a way to take a file, dremel, etc to it and smooh out the inside.

as for the heat shield. I searched up on heat resistent wraping and came up with this.

              home depot

if the entire heat shield is wrapped in this, maybe that would help.

what if you bought a cheap intake off of ebay, used the same shield that you have and wrap the whole tube in insulation wrap or tape. In the mean time till you get your hood done, gut the lower part of the air box out, and make some sort of a scoop in the fender well behind the bumper to channel the air up into the air filter. just an idea. i just bought a new cai so i can't help too much

if you bought a short ram intake or cai off ebay and used a new filter. then you wrapped the tubing in insulation, that solves the whole debate of the air moves fast enough, it doesn't matter and metal lets air flow better.

I just want to comment on this DIY, fist of I respect the fact that you took an effort to do this but probably people already told you that it actually restricts the air that goes in your intake, best way to gt more air and without having CAI and having the risk of it submergeing in whater is just put a scoop that runs from your bumper turn signal lights and run it towars your intake, what you do is cut out the passenger turnsignal lens part and replace it with mesh then either paint it black so it doesnt look like a mesh. I did this to mine and Ill take a few picks, I tested it out by using a leive blower and facing it towards the scoop to simulate driving at 40-60 mph and DAMn, their was alot of air getting pushed in and I even had to reinforced the tube part because their was alot of air being scooped. in my opinion it takes in more air than CAI. and the problem with the intake bypass with CAI is if your intake head was only partially submerged or expose to water your engine will still take on alot of water but my method is if their ever was water that gets scooped in it wouldnt the water wouldnt have enough suction to get into the intake head. IF YOU GUYS ARE INTERESTED ON ME MAKING A DIY OF THIS METHOD. PM ME FOR REQUEST.thanks ( lol, sorry for the long message.

you can get it a lot of places, o'reilys, walmart, autozone, etc. if you ask them about it, they will be able to show you where it is. its really not nessicary, i just think it looks a lot better.

btw, i may be getting a cheap short ram this summer and re-doing this project with either sheet aluminum or fiberglass, i havent decided yet. before i do that though, i will be re-locating my battery to my trunk to free up some space.
