This mod isn't the best Idea, And I wouldn't advise anyone to do it.

Pros:
1) None that I can see

Cons:
1) It confuses other drivers
2) When the "bright brake" filament blows, other drivers won't know if your braking or not.
3) Other drivers following you will think your driving with your foot on the brake.
4) Its illegal, and likely to attract unwanted attention
5) When someone rear ends you and your talking to insurance about it, then they discover what you have done - you will be liable.

Lots of new cars in canada have this 3rd brake light as part of the DRL system..BMW 323.....Nissan Maxima....My dads ford fusion has it too...so maybe in the states its illegal but in canada im sure it doesnt matter...and besides that he is being creative and if you dont like it thats ok, its a cool idea and he likes it and im sure many others will too....Good work brother

I live in Canada... and I have never seen this. I would have noticed. Then again, if its a new thing, I do live way out in the boonies. lol.

I give points for creativity, but not for safety. The third brake light catches your attention. When you nail the brakes for some reason, all of the sudden, theres a light on that wasn't there before. It might be the thing that causes the guy behind you to glance up a half second sooner, and it might end up saving your life, and the person behind you.

Sure, it still lights up brighter, but it defeats the purpose of the third brake light.

I don't think it has anything to do with annoyance. If I was following you from a distance, I'd figure you were driving and early 90s jetta or golf with all those crazy tailight/running light/blinker problem combos they always have. (that is, if you can still SEE the lights through the black film they always drive around with)

Negative comments aren't always fun... but when it comes to a mod that is unsafe, I'd take that criticism and think about it.

I have to agree this is stupid. The point of the 3rd brake light is so tell if the person is braking and they arent just dim lights. I dont even see how this looks cool? Its just a light?

The 3rd brake light should never be illuminated unless its being used when you brake.

Yes, at least here in VT I would get pulled over in a heartbeat for doing this. Cool DIY though! the problem is that I think in most states it'd be considered defective equipment, since the third brakelight, as with all the brakelights aren't meant to be illuminated unless the pedal is pressed in.

so has your 3rd brake light housing melted yet? mine did on my '91, and I didn't even modify it at all. just the heat from the standard bulb melted the shit out of the housing way back in the '90's and it never could properly hold a bulb since.
