    MPG spreadsheet/graphs

I've been learning excel in school, and I one day I decided to make a spreadsheet for my fuel mileage, I figured out how to insert graphs and mark trends...it's boring but if anyone wants to know how the cost of driving an accord is, here ya go

Dude, that's pretty sweet. Any chance you could post a blank one on here, so all we'd have to do is input our info?

It'd be pretty sweet for analyzing the health of my car over time, like how cleaning air filters help, spark plugs/wires, all those little things.

just out of curiosity, were you using the same grade of gas from the same gas station for the duration of this?

        nice....thanks.

I'm averaging about 26-27? mpg right now

Your mileage is significantly lower than mine. Right now on this winter-shit gas I am getting 25-27 mpg. But in the summer with the good stuff I get 28-31 mpg.

Wow! That's nice. PLEASE post a blank one so we can all use it! I need this...

Nope it wasn't from the same station, but I usually only fill up at one place. That and keeping the pedal the same are the hardest variables to control, but what can I say, I'm not gonna go crazy

All my driving is city, light to moderate stop and go, usually 5 miles or less each trip. And between jan-1-08 and like jan-6-08 I took a road trip to savannah and st aug, GA and FL. Loaded with 4 people including the driver and their luggage. We only got about 24-25 mpg during that trip. My driving is usually just myself, no extra weight, but being a 93 ex coupe, cb's don't get much heavier

I'll see if I can make up a blank spreadsheet later in the evening, but I've never really done templates, it will probably require some knowledge of excel to get your data and graphs to display correctly.

I uploaded and attached my spreadsheet with my first entries included. Simply delete my data and add yours. Now, when you run out of space and need to add a new line there is a little arrow at the bottom right corner of the table. Simply take that and drag it out one line to add a new entry. The overall average MPG changes with it.

I can't see any of these graphs, at work, they have smartfilter.

Anyhow, my red project accord that is a mild all-motor build gets 25-26 mpg in winter and 28-29 mpg in warmer weather, for reference. This is filling up at various gas stations and using strictly 87 octane. Maintenance is always up-to-date on my car.

Another thing to consider is in winter some of us tend to let our cars warm up for various reasons (which I'm not saying is bad), but that uses gas. This will affect your overall gas mileage, just something to consider.

I also wonder, how many people have good coolant temp sensors (TW) that report back to ECU and if the condition of this sensor has an effect as well. I will be replacing mine for peace of mind with new OEM ($33) to see if it helps my winter gas mileage, that and it smells rich when idling in cold weather.

that's a very good point too man, i've noticed on my truck that i've been getting getting less and less mpg lately. It's because i've been letting my truck warm up before i start driving.

won't we also get fewer miles per gallon as they add more ethanol? They are starting to have 10% gas around my parts, I was curious about how big an effect this would actually have.

I'm sure my foot will have much more of an effect...but still.

                      Here's the info...from RFA website

Other tests and studies suggest that fuel economy may decrease by approximately 2% in fuel-injected cars, such that a car averaging 30 miles per gallon (MPG) on the highway would average 29.4 MPG using an ethanol-blended fuel (10% ethanol)

doesn't take excel spreadsheets, but I can zip it

                            Enter the information as such,

-First, when you fill up, reset your trip odo
-Next time you fill up be sure to fill all the way to the top, then write your mileage for this trip on the receipt, then reset it for next time
-With the receipt, fill in the information for each line

Date:obviously the date you filled up
Price per gallon: the price you paid per gallon
Fuel cost total: How much you spent total to fill up
Mile traveled this tank: The mileage on your trip when you filled up
Calculated MPG: This should be filled out for you, the formula is 'miles traveled'/'gallons filled up'
Cost per mile should also be filled out for you, its formula is 'calculated MPG'/'price per gallon'
Cost per mile determines approximately how much it's costing you to drive your accord per mile in gas. It doesn't take into account anything else like maintenance and repairs

And the graphs simply plot out some of the information to show you the trends for your mpg, the price of gas, and the cost to drive your accord

I imagine their may be some problems...for example the first formula isn't filled out correctly because I had to override it for a strange situation I had, you'll need to make some edits to it, but if you have any trouble let me know.

So like I am trying to take my spreadsheet and make it more user-friendly by adding the totals row at the bottom of the table so that the totals/average values automatically adjust to the range of cells when you increase the table size (add entries to the sheet). However, since you calculate the MPG of a tank of gas using the information provided on next fill-up. So basically at your last entry the MPG column is going to display zero. I figured out a way to manipulate the formula in the totals row to exclude the zeros in that column.

But now since the totals row is exactly one row below the end of the table values now the MPG column in the last cell (that should be displaying zero) is not because the row below (the totals row) now has values in it. Very large ones at that. I need a way to nullify the values in the total row when calculating average MPG.

Excel gurus and or programmers help me out. This is only an algorithm problem I know. I just cannot figure out what algorithm I need to use to void those values.

                              Works best with Office 2007.
