key wont come out of ignition

i have this issue when its cold out side and it urks my nerves. ive searched but the search wont include words that are less than 4 letters long. someone needs to fix that. probably why some people cant find nothin lol

anyways. for some odd reason, when its cold outside, i cant get my ket out of the ignition. once i put it in park i cant take the key out untill the light on the dash comes on. i can shift in and out of park with no problem. but its like i have to wait for the car to realize its in park. the red "P" light has to come on before i can take the key out. anyone got any clues as to what the problem is and/or how to solve it?

yes, clean the white box inside your shifter
It is corroded and causes the delay in the lights
It also causes slow engagement into gears (Like D4, R, P more commonly)

    18 years takes its toll
Its easy, take your console apart, disconnect and remove the white shift box thats attached to your shifter.
Now either clean it or buy a new one
I chose to clean mine, give it a good scratching with some oil and a screw driver.
Slide the guy back and forth rapidly then re-assemble.
Mine had alot of black gunk on it. I'm goin on 8 months since I cleaned mine and the cars acts new!

Sometimes, you will not be able to turn the car off because the key gets stuck. In that case, wiggle the key hard until its free to be normally removed.
The solution will be to replace the entire ignition switch assembly.
