    H22a oil pan leak.

I have a slight oil leak. It seems to be right between my motor and tranny. Im thinking the oil pan. I have yet to look. The engine runs strong just changed the oil to mobil 1 10-40w. What things should i look for first?

did it leak before you switch to synthetic?

Changing the oil pan gasket isnt that bad, you just have to drop the downpipe etc to get to it. If you do change it, be sure to NOT overtighten any of the bolts, or you'll rip the new gasket easily. Use some hondabond on the corners just to be safe.

The only other thing that can be leaking near that area underneath would be the rear main seal which requires dropping the trans. I say you eliminate the oil pan first, or find a way to pinpoint the leak

        Perhaps the flywheel oil seal?

That is the rear main seal.

why don't you clean the shit out of the bottom of the car and get some petroleum based/safe engine oil uv dye and run it for a a day or so then hit with the uv light and that way you will know exactly where you are leaking from. it comes in like a bazillion different colours. red, green, yellow, orange, blue.... napa sell kit you can also use their a/c uv dye system kit i think it's like $30 it comes with a light and a few small bottles of dye. you just need to make sure it's safe for a gasoline powered petroleum based engine not diesel.

When I put mine back on after changing the main/rod bearings on my H22A I just put some silicone all around the lip of the pan, and then stuck the gasket to that. Then I let it sit for 5-10 minutes before I put it on the engine, to allow time for the silicone to kinda harden up. When I put it on, I didn't have to worry about the gasket squishing out as I tightened the pan down. I also tightened it to specs, cause I had the torque wrench out already anyways.

You better hope it isn't the rear main... that would suck. We always replace them at the same time we do the clutch. It's only $10, and then I don't have to worry about it.

It's either rear main or the curved portion of the oil pain, in which you should put silicone sealant under and above the gasket on the corners of the curve to help seal. Perhaps that wasn't done when your oil pan gasket was replaced.

Regardless, the easier of the two to fix is the oil pan. Remove it, clean, reseal it (if gasket is reuseable, if not replace & reseal). Make sure you take the silicone sealant tip I mentioned in the 1st paragraph. Then, clean that under area decent and check back in a few days. You'll have your answer then and peace of mind on the oil pan portion.

The rear main seal, you can leave the engine/oil pan in tact, basically remove tranny and flywheel to get to it. At this point, if you're having clutch/flywheel issues, replace what is needed.

                            What you can do is:

You might wanna degrease that area and run the engine for 5 minutes then shut it off. Look under the car to spot any oil traces that you might see.

Since the oil pan was taken off 2 times like you said , the oil pan gasket might be worn out.

I had the same thing , oil leaks from the tranny. I found out that a certain section of the oil pan gasket is leaking oil and it walks through the tranny and drips off.

I got my oil pan gasket changes a week ago an I have no more leaks.

                            Hope this helps B.
