is it true that our ecus wear out over time?

    just something i heard.
like the ecu right now does not run like it did when it was brand new from the factory.
    true?
what's the fix for this? chipping the ecu? getting a new ecu? how much does a new one at the dealer cost?

Any sensor/valve on your car will wear out eventually......TPS, IAC, O2, ABS, Speed, MAP, etc....but no, the ecu doesn't "wear out". It may get damaged from a voltage spike, short circuit, vibration, etc....think of it like a calculator, it takes input and gives specific outputs for said inputs, period.

bad start ups, bad gas mileage, fail emissions test, stuff like that tell you a sensor is going, or an idiot light comes on.

An ECU can wear out, but the program won't change. The only thing that could come with time would be the solder points would crack and fail. I have yet to see that happen, though. I'm sure we've all got plenty of years left before that! If you pull out your ECU and look at it, you'll see that it probably looks brand new inside.

a check engine light will appear.

all electronics go bad eventually. however, the ECU should outlast your car in normal conditons. later.

Both ECUs? My car only has one.

"Wear out" I suppose is a bad term. They will eventually fail. As long as the failure doesn't cause damage, they can always be re-soldered.

Brian, DO EET! A polished ECU would kick ass Not that you'd ever see it... but whatever.

I actually had my JDM P13 take a dump on my. I thought my motor jumped time because how bad it ran. So a tuned p28 fixed that problem.
