    Thermostat stuck open ...

ok heres the deal. I think my thermostat is stuck open or reading incorrectly.

Before when it was warmer outside, he temp gauge was at middle, but not middle a little bit lower than the middle. Even when i was idling or going 90 mph.
Now that it is colder, it barley gets off of Cold. sometimes itll go up to 1/8th but thats the max it will show. Same thing as before idling or 90mph it shows the same.

I am thinking my thermostat is broken or stuck open. It could be stuck open pumping coolant all the time, which is good, but not for me bc this is supposed to be a/my ecnobox, and i dont want it to pumpo gas in like its cold.

Or im thinking that its just reading wrong. I know the engine isnt overheating or anything bc after just about each drive i check everything, and the engine is warm, but never overheating hot type thing. Im pretty sure i need to replace the thromostat, im not not secure enough to diagnose my problem myself.

Also if you want to tell me, where is the thermostat? I could probably figure it out, but ive never actually did anything involving the thermostat. Is it near the place you bleed the cooling system? or is that actually it?

    remove
    put in pan of water

cool to see if it closes

yes it is in the housing where the bleeder bolt is.

Another way to check it, is to remove the rad. cap when its completely cold and start the car look in the rad. and see if the coolant is flowing - it shouldn't be.

If it jams, force it. If it breaks, it needed replacement anyway.

Sounds like there may not be a thermostat at all...

Possibly, but most of the newer thermostats have a safety feature, if they fail they remain open vs. closed.

its called failsafe, i know, but they still restrict water some. if the gauge is staying on cold all the time, you can bet there's no restriction. my gauge hardly ever moved last winter when i ran with no thermostat, and i live in az

I did say it was possible and he said it goes up to an 1/8th

edit: doesn't it get cold in AZ at night, when I ran my CB w/o a thermostat I didn't have heat.

ok, so i checked the coolant when i start the car, and it dosent flow, meaning the water pump isnt pumping.

Might i also add, that when started the idle is up around 1500 and then drops steadily to 7-800 just like it should be...

Don't replace the waterpump yet, the water shouldn't flow when its cold because the thermostat is closed, check again after it warms up and it should be flowing.

ya, i dunno what ima do, it runs fine. It got up to half way today. But mostly stays at 1/8. next time i fill up, im gonna see how the milage is. If its pretty good, ima leave it the way it is..

And if the water pump would be broken/bad, i would be overheating, but im not.

If the water pump was broken/bad you would be overheating. Sounds like you have a broken t-stat. Mine was broken on my cb-7 when I use to drive it with the stock motor... Summer time was great the needle barely moved past a quarter. Winter time sucked... the heater would work from stop light to stop light and then stop working on the highway.
