    Polishing Plastic

I know this has been discussed before, but nothing has ever been in stone. How would one go about polishing plastic? I've got two things; my Alpine crossover box covers have a million real light surface scratches, and my JDM headlights have one somewhat shallow rub across one light's surface. How about the clearcoat on those headlights...can that be re-done with a standard automotive clearcoat?

I do believe there's some sort of buffing compound for plastics. wal-mart or pep boys may have some good products for you.

I don't know how well it works for plastic headlights (since mine are glass) but I just detailed my car using 3m Fine Cut rubbing compound and meguiar's 3 step. Even did my tail lights. I think it came out very well!

My best recommendation would be to get some 3M Fine Cut Rubbing Compound and a good polish compound. Try it on a small spot that isn't eaisly seen first (just to be safe).

      yuuuup

i agree w/ pwrusr... 3m is the way to go. gets rid of haze and all. might have to put a lil elbow grease into getting out a very very very minor scratch. worth the try though. good luck

This product is made by Maguires:

        http://www.ipdusa.com/ProductsCat.aspx?CategoryID=651&NodeID=2514&RootID =629

I've used it forever and it has great results- not only on headlights but loads of other plasticy surfaces. Highly recommended.

What about the Mother's mag and Wheel trick...I've heard it works really well...I've also used Scratch X (forget the company...maybe meguiars or other known detailing company), haven't had stellar results, but I did notice an improvement in the finish (shiny vs. dull) but no improvement in nicks.

            plastics use this:

            mequiars scratch x....

its a white bottle, about 6 bucks.

its neat good for any plastic, gets alot of the surface "light" scratches off...and really cool cause u can use it on the rear lights, bumper lights, corners etc.

            try that..

it wont harm the lens either.
What makes me laugh about forums, is that no matter how much you try to help someone, they dont take the advice. Go ahead and do it the hard way.

You got to respect what you drive, and appreciate what you have, making the best of what you got. and if that means putting CAI, HID's, a phat stereo system, and a idiot in the drivers seat...then so be it!

            Retro!
