tranny problems

We just got a 90 lx coupe with an automatic tranny. It idles fine, but when started, the "S" for the sport shift light stays on. When put in D4, it stays in 3rd all the time. When manually shifted from 1 to D4 it starts out in 1st but when put in D2 it goes straight to 3rd and stays there.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

jump the service connector and check what codes you have for the tranny.
