auto seatbelt crapped out on me...

My automatic seatbelt on my drivers side is stuck in the farthest position away from the seat (as it would be if you opened the door). It won't move back into its normal position when I shut the door while my key is in the ignition.

I checked the fuses in the engine compartment (the passive motor fuses) and both are good. I don't hear any grinding from the seatbelt motor, as was the case in my old Ford Tempo when it's seatbelts went as well. I do know that the Tempo's seatbelts ran on a plastic chain, and from a quick visual inspection, it seems the Accord's run on a steel wire.

Does anyone know where I can start to fix this problem? I haven't done anything at all that I can figure would cause this. If needed, I love taking pictures so I can easily disasemble the B piller and take photos of the motor (I'm guessing thats where the motor is) to help in diagnostics. I'd greatly appreciate any help.

hey, this happened to my passenger side seatbelt. Call up Honda and tell them or go up there and explain whats going on and they will just check to make sure there wasnt any tampering with it and if they arent signs of it, they will replace it for free.

Awesome, I just read that thread that mentioned Honda did free repairs on the seatbelts. It's too late now, but tommaro I will call my local Honda place and see if they will fix it. I'll post tommaro what they say.

Just got off the phone with my local Honda service department. They don't have any sort of warrenty on the automatic seatbelts due to them being very costly to repair.

My advice to everyone who has bad auto seatbelts is to do what I'm going to do, convert them to manual.

When I get this done I will post a DIY with lotsa photos so others can do this as well.

As I posted in the other thread...

Honda replaced my seatbelt regulator for free after mine went on the fritz. The dealer also warned me that they would charge me an inspection fee (which was labor rate for an hour, ie more than $45) if the problem was negligence. I figured $70 or whatever it cost, was worth my safety and piece of mind of knowing the seatbelt had been fixed correctly.

Here's the link to that thread.

Fucking bullshit. I checked up in the new car warranty booklet that came with my car, and Honda does provide a lifetime warranty on seatbelts (I think it's federal law that they have to) There are two cases in which Honda could deny you this service: 1.) If you tampered with the belt, and 2.) If the car can be deemed 'beyond usable lifetime' which basically means that the sum of all the problems the car has would be more than the cash value of the car without the problems.

Dealers are bastards. Don't ever forget that. The only way you will get satisfaction on this is to write a letter to Honda corporate (you can get contact info on the website) It ain't so great, but the dealer shouldn't deny you that warranty service. Also, you may want to check with your local DMV. If I'm correnct in that the seatbelts must have a lifetime warranty by law, the DMV would be the first place to go I would think.

Also, automatic seatbelts are the shittiest thing since my mom's Ford Windstar. Has anyone turned their car off with the seatbelt locked? It happens to me every once in a while, and chokes the fuck out of me. A DIY on auto --> manual seatbelt conversion would be a great thing.

                  Peace out and good luck!!

Yeah, I did have an auto -> manual how to.. unfortunately i cant find it.. I did do a quick picture of what you have to do for someone.... lemme find the link.

those are pretty much what you need to do... the red and green is where you run into a little custom fabrication. Its not too hard.

But Honda should redo your seatbelts... they have to. You need to talk to the manager of that dealership.... i would have a hard time beleiving that he would not do anything, because im sure he can get in serious trouble if he does not.

And if you need to use your car, there is a way to manually retract the auto seatbelts so they are in the position they should be in. Lemme check my helms and i'll post back in a min when i find it.

                    edit:
yeah, take off the lower trim piece. At the base of the motor, there is the bottom assembly thing. Near the top of it, there is a screw towards the middle. You turn that, and it will manually move the seatbelt for ya.

An update: My mom, not realizing i had called Honda, called herself and they DO have a lifetime warrenty on the auto seatbelts.

So for everyone else's problems, they do fix them free as long as it isn't abuse or a fuse.
