Idle drops down till the car shuts down

OK guys… What do you think the issue is?

Yesterday I was out for a drive to the Mall. Now, mind you I have a 5speed…. I saw that when I can off the gas, my idle would slowly drop…. I mean if I was at a red light with my foot on the brake, my idle would drop so far down the engine would shut down. I could start the car back up fast but it would just die out again….. So after sit’n at the light for about 3mins with the car off… I tried it again and it fired up. I would have to keep my foot on the gas to keep the engine on. This is the second time that this has happened in 6 weeks time….. At first I thought it was something wrong with the gas that I was using…. Now I don’t think it’s the gas anymore, I just put a half a tank in on the day this happened…. So just from sit’n have’n a few beers, I think the issue is the fuel pump…. So a new fuel pump & strainer is in order…. What do you guys think?

bad gas... i don't think it is fuel pump when you start ignition key to acc can you hear it come on? if so thats fine. either that or your o2 prolly sending incorrect readings to the ecu ...there are other equations that can cause this but i'll leave it up for the rest of the peepz on here
either kill it or drift it...

Thanks for the input man... I don't think it is the gas.... I mean the Gas is good because I have no issue with my truck....( Got gas from the same place ).... The reason I say that its the fuel pump is because... Damn-neer the same thing happend in my 4 door a few years back.... Once the fuel pump changed the issue went away.... I just wanted to see if any guys on here have had something happen to them like it happend to me.....

I don't know if this helps but if it's solely an idle problem then you could check the Idle Air Control Valve or the Fast Idle Control valve. My idle was surging and I cleaned out the IAC valve. Now it idles down around 200 rpms, slowly drops then stops there. I was just gonna adjust the screw to raise idle.

This probably doesn't help b/c yours appears to do it just irregularly, but thought I'd throw it in here just in case.

need to know this too. it happen to me once. my car wouldn't start. i had to press the gass pedale a little for the car to start. then while stoped at a red light at idle the needle would go so close to the red line that i thought the car would shut off and it did a couple of times. once i start it back up(no problems there) i shifter at 4k rpms and i didn't have that issue again. no cel lights or anything like that.

            so its the same situation
let us know what you guys think about it.
are we there yet are we there yet are we there yet

That is something to think about.... I will take a look at that first thing in the AM..... Right now I'm driven my truck... For some reason my CB didn't want to start.... I turned the power off and on a few times... Just to hear the Fuel pump and know that gas at the least was try'n to go from the tank to my H22 .... Still had no luck to get it to start up.... do you thing the IACV or the FIV would cause my ride not to start up... Or is that just for when you have an idle issue when the car is running?

If someone adjusted the mechanical idle incorrectly, that could cause it.

Try disconnecting the IACV altogether and see where it idles.

Adjust it so that it idles between 650-700, and then plug the IACV back in.

That is where I would start.

Thanks man.... I will try that just as soon as i get up in the AM..... I just went out to start it and it started right up... Guess because its 3AM right now... Idle looked fine.... I will drive it around for a few mins when I get up just to see if the Idle drops again.... Thanks again guys who are giving me some ideas....

The reason I am thinking what I am thinking is because when coolant temps are cool, the IACV boosts the idle, to keep the engine running, and to keep it from surging.

As the engine warms, the mechanical idle becomes more important, because the IACV will essentially smooth any throttle transitions, and then close.

So once it is warmed, up, the idle is highly dependent on the idle screw.

I had the same problem with a hatch of mine a while back.

Symptoms of a bad igntion coil. I'd start with your ignition system man.

I took the IACV off today... It was a lil dirty... I guess I'll have some time to clean it up when I get off work...

i have a issue that sounds the same. when i start/remote start my car which is an auto, as soon as i put the car in gear or deactivate remote start it drops down to like 200rpm and i have to push the pedal a tiny bit and then it idles fine.. it does it bad when its real cold at night and i go out in the morning, but since its been gettin back up to 95* its been better, but it still does it.
