    Auto Shifter STUCK in D4

Ok so on Saturday after returning home from a meet here in KC I pulled into my driveway and put the CB in Park (AUTOMATIC) I usually pull the E-brake then just to secure it since my driveway is on a bit of an incline. I didnt pull the E-brake this time. The car started rolling backwards while in Park.. I asked around a little bit and heard that it sounds like my tranny was getting ready to give out on me..

Yesterday, Sunday, I moved the CB so that I could play basketball in the driveway. I got the CB moved out of the way, however when I went to put it into Park the Shifter was stuck in D4. I turned the CB off but of course cant get the key out of the ignition or start the car again since you can only start it in Park or Neutral. I can get the shifter to move from D4 down to D3 and all the way down to 1 with more force the usual on the shifter... I was thinking maybe it was something to do with the shifter linkage, that isnt exactly something that is DIY material for me. Also heard to replace wiring harness that connects to the shifter base..

Anyone ever had a similar problem and care to shed some light on what to do? I need to figure this out ASAP and CHEAP as possible. About the last thing that I need is a bill from towing it to a shop and then a shop bill. LMK. ASAP. Later

Hmmmm damn dude i have heard of this happening here and there.

It doesnt sound like the tranny as much as the shift assem.

I could be wrong but if it drives fine before hand i cant see where it would be the tranny.

No slippage or weirdness out of her before this???

    Maybe its a solenoid?!

Surely someone will come along with more answers.

    Good luck man!!

First thing I would check would be your shift cables.

keep an extra key on u, any key will work. next time it happens, use the shift lock to see if it will get the shifter out of gear.

Shift lock relese is doing nothing... I just got home and tried it again now it wont move from D4 to anything. I did get the key out of the ignition now. You can remove the key if the battery is disconnected. I spotted that in my trusty Haynes manuel earlier.

And Ralphie, I am heading back out there now to check that solenoid. If that doesnt work hondaccordgrl's husband has offered to come take a look at it.. So hopefully I can get something figured out. Later

                UPDATE:

Shifter is still stuck in D3. I can get it down to 2 and 1, then back it up to D3 again but D4 is now out of reach.

Here is what I am working on now...

Just heading out to find a new solenoid that looks like this

Will keep this posted... LMK if you can think of anything else. Later

Well I called the Mechanic that my parents take their cars to and described everything to him. He said it sounds like a shift cable or the shift linkage has came loose. He is gonna take it from here. Just have to call a tow truck in the morning... Not what I wanted to have to do but I gotta do it.. Will keep you posted as to what it turns out to be. Thanks for the help. Later

Good Luck with that. Too bad it came down to the tow to the mechanic. I know you tried to figure it out and then got stumped and frustrated. Our coupe has the shifter stuck in Park. When I did start it I then went with that extra key in the shift release (should be a Honda, fits better and you have to press that key down to release shift) to put it into a gear. Got to check the Shift solenoid too. But right now I got a wrong main relay so can't start it. I need a RZ-0088 if any one has one! If not then it's..tow to the mechanic.

Just got home from picking up the CB.. Turns out, the Shift cable was all tore up just from normal wear and tear on a 16+ year old car. So $308+the tow later I am back up and running. Thanks for all the help and suggestions everyone. Later

Makes it hard to drive to the mechanic's shop when it wont start... You can ONLY start an AUTO while in Park or Neutral. I couldnt get to either one of those so I was shit out of luck. Later
