    alternator?

So when i start my car, the lights(headlights, gauge lights, even clock) pulse, like they fade in an out at a steady rhythm. it gets worse when i press the gas. It has a brand new alternator and battery, the guy said he wasnt sure how to put the alternator in, maybe he put the belt on wrong? how tight/loose is it supppose to be. i feel a little play in it.

ALSO, when i press the gas, for like half a second you can hear a squeak coming from the engine area, any ideas?

for one, why the hell would u let someone put it in if they wasnt sure how to put it in?!....two, belt is too tight thats why u hear that sqeak...and three, sounds like he didnt hook it up right.

Its ac/alt and power steering. that order. My guess would be that the alternator belt is loose. Just tighten it. About a 1/4" to a 1/2" of play

I just bought the car, I didnt let anyone touch it. it came like this.

ac/alt and power steering? whats ac?

one of you says too tight, other says too loose, which is it? it squeaks, and the lights pulse.

ac=compressor for air conditioning. You have a belt for power steering and a belt for alternator and ac. Thats how they go on Pull up and down on the alternator/ac belt and see if it is too loose.

Update: So it doesnt do it when the car is OFF with the lights on. Only when the car is on and running. Gets worse when i Press the gas, then it rpms drop below idle and feels like its gonna die as the lights pulse.

any ideas? I found out the squeak is actually just air being sucked into the intake, so there is NO squeak, only pulsing lights, and weak idle and blah blah.

please help. Belt doesnt feel too loose or tight, but then again i dunno how tight or loose its supposed to be. it has a little play, barely any tho. I think the prob is getting worse too.

First, check all your battery cables, posts and battery connections to the block, starter, etc. Make sure they tight and clean with no corrosion. Check alternator wiring also. The main wire likes to come loose sometimes. Make sure they are tight, not broken and clean

Get a voltmeter/mulitimeter and turn it on to dc volts. hook it up to your battery. red for positve, black for negative. Do this with the car idling with all loads on. Should be 14 volts. If you dont have a multimeter, then take your alternator off and take it to advanced auto parts and have them test the alternator for you.

Update: Incase anyone was curious, or has a similar problem later. Turns out the Voltage Regulator on the alternator was bad, even tho it was brand new. Works fine now after replacing it =)
