    Learning about oil

Hi everyone, I have been trying to learn as much as I can about motor oil lately. I've discovered the Bob Is The Oil Guy site (http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/), and I have a hard time figuring out why they make the recommendations that they do. Also, I see that a good amount of their higher-up / more senior members have worked for a major oil company at some point, so I'm afraid their opinions might be biased, and it seems (to me at least) like a large portion of their members obsess over oil, e.g. importing European oil, etc. Am I missing something here, is American oil that bad?

Sorry if this post seems to go nowhere, I'm just confused about oil, and having a hard time following and understanding the BITOG site, which is supposed to be a good resource, from what I've heard. So I suppose I'm looking for someone to help explain it to me, or recommend a better site.

Obsessing over oil...at an oil site. Gee.

Anyways, they usually reccomend one oil over another due to actual testing and oil sample results, and not just the usual advertising or "I've always used this!" junk.

Nothing wrong with American oil, Euro spec oil has (sometimes) a higher standards to meet, so if you want the "best", (however you define that) you'll seek a higher standard than just SAE.
