You know you just said that you recommend going OVER 45 until it's near running temp, right?
The practice of actually 'warming up' the car is only needed if you want hot air right away. The main point in letting the car run for a bit before driving off is to get the oil where it needs to go to be fully lubricated. I rarely ever let my car 'warm up'. I let it idle for about 10-15 minutes to get oil everywhere, but that's it. I keep my car in the garage so it's not cold to where it needs to be 'warmed up'.
whoops. Did I mention I failed math in 9th grade, this is probably something I missed.
Colder engine, more fuel to keep it running, yeah it's logical. Am I worried about the pint of fuel per tank I may lose? No.
the quickest i will warm up the car in cold weather is when the RPM drops to about 1.8-1.9K RPM. otherwise if i have time, i wait until the needle starts moving
I usually start the car and let it warm up until' the needle starts to rise. However, if I need to leave right away, I usually hop in, and just start driving normally, that of course, means not flooring it.
once you guys first warm it up in the morning or whatever, do you still let it warm up a few seconds after you make stops and such (like going to the market)?
my car almost never gets warm enough...probably b/c Im running my F22A1 ECU with the F20A....Im pretty sure its running a little rich...
I wait for about 3 minutes...then drive below 2500rpm for a while until it feels hot enough.

i let mine run for 5-10 minutes... but i'm here in NH where temps are really cold. Tomorrow its supposed to be 7 degrees with a windchill factor of -15.

Damn that's cold. Yea, I noticed I see a lot less MPG in this cold weather.

this is going way too far!!! someone said you waste more gas driving the car without it warmed up? well you let your car sit 10-15 mins each time you leave your house, leave work, leave a friends house... each day. letting it warm up on idle is a waste of gas, i was going through a tank of gas every 3-4 days going maybe 250 miles.. so now i just start it up let it sit for 10-15 seconds and i'm off and getting 400+ miles per tank.

Yup, just short shift till it heats up. I can tell when my car warms up to a good temp because the oil pressure drops from like 100 to 30 at idle.
That and cuz I have a water temp guage. Usualy 120 is warm enough. When its really cold in the winter I coverup half the radiator.
Warming up a car for an extended period of time is going to do more then hurt the gas milage.
i heard somewhere that said warming up for more then 30-45 seconds will start to hurt the engine. but in northeast winters, i don't see how you can get away with warming up anywhere faster then 1-2 minutes. the cb just doesnt feel right if it isn't warmed up for at least a minute

I would agree about hurting gas mileage. Simply because your RPM's are at such high rates when it's cold, and constant, it's like holding your foot on the gas and keeping it there.
But, hurting anything more than gas mileage? I wouldn't believe. Cars are designed to run. Regardless of any weather.
I personally think that letting it run for at least five minutes would be OK, because it gives the oil time to pretty much lubricate all the parts within the engine.
I just wait until RPM drops below 1K.
My car runs much better with normal operating temp!
Summer 3 min tops, winter 5min or more.
