not personally, but i saw many stock ones on random cars while working at jiffy lube and they were always coated with shit.. so yes, im sure they would work...

Yep, mostly(and hopefully) it is a fine metal sludge or paste.
I have one for the trans and oil plug.

the transmission drain plug has more use for the magnetism. Found mine covered with tiny chips!

And if you drop the pan, there is probably one or two more stuck in there.

There should be an interior magnet on your transmission.

As for the oil plugs yes they do work. Check out SuperPlug.Com. If you have ever held an earth magnet against a metal part then you would know how strong the bond is.
