    Acetone fuel mileage experiment

Well, I decided to begin the test to decide, for myself at least, whether adding acetone to your gas will improve fuel economy.

My normal driving technique is in city, stop and go, short distance.

    Before I started the experiment.....

    $43.71 @ 2.919 per gallon
14.975 gallons filled to the top
    Trip odo showed 355.58 miles
    23.744 mpg

    followed by

    $42.22 @ 2.869 per gallon
    14.715 gallons filled to top
    Trip odo showed 348.19 miles
    23.662 mpg

Now I started the experiment by trying to stay as conservative as possible on the gas pedal. Unfortunatly I went WOT twice during this period and got on the gas hard 3 times, but for the most part I tried to drive as relaxed as possible. (It's not always easy) The results of conservative driving yielded....

    $43.12 @ 2.869 per gallon
    15.030 gallons filled to top
    Trip odo showed 386.88 miles
    25.740 mpg

Today I filled it up full and then picked up some pure acetone. It was an 8 oz bottle and I used half. Approx. 4 oz added to 15 gallons of fuel. The website I had read recommended 2-3 oz per 10 gallons of fuel. That would be 4-6 for 20 so I just figured 4 oz would be good without overdoing it.

So now I begin driving with acetone, and I'm trying to drive normally, not conservatively. Averaging my previous "normal" driving gives you 23.703. When this tank finishes I'll let you know the results.

on the stairs, she grabs my arm, says whats up,
where you been, is something wrong?
i try to just smile, and say everything’s fine.

Well, lets see what kind of info I can post for now.

            332.5/15.212=21.86 mpg
This instance isn't entirely accurate, because I ran the air nearly every day, and the car was left sitting with the air running for about an hour. (for the sake of a passenger)

            355.7/14.628=24.32 mpg
This was my last fillup. This whole time I've been somewhat heavy-footed, all stop and go.

I filled up tonight and I decided I would forego mixing in acetone to compare the results. Then i can go back to filling up.

Each time I did add acetone I added 4 oz to a full tank.

I might add that these results aren't very promising. +1 mpg?

I wish I could perform more accurate and reliable tests, but I still have to drive nearly everyday, and its hard to go easy on the throttle when people start doing ricer fly-bys on you.

Filled up today...on regular gas, no additive,

                354.45/14.030 = 25.26

This time after filling up I added a bottle of lucas fuel additive

The small bottle there. We'll see how this effects mpg, then its back to acetone. I'll probably finish off this bottle I have and stop, because these results aren't really worth the time and effort.

I only used a little more than half a tank with the additive b/c I had to top off for my trip to miami.

Before the top off it came to 24.79 mpg

Now the trip to miami put 200 highway miles on the tank, which really boosted my mpg.

200 highways miles + 211 stop and go = 411 miles on this tank, 27.397. ha, much better than any additive can do...

So now I'm rolling narrower tires, I decided to fill up without additive to see if the tires have an effect. I had 205's now I have 195's (different wheels, itr's, possible weight difference?)

I can pretty much hypothesize that acetone as an additive is not an impressive or time-worthy device. Store bought additives work better, and going easy on the throttle works even better still. While making most of your miles on the highway is the most significant boost in mpg.

Wow thnx for the informative post. But I was wondering if you took into account of temperature in the experiment. Would it the temperature affect the results much?

Well, I'm in FL and its hot down here. Also I'm at sea level.

I've been led to believe that...

cold air=increases power, decreases fuel economy
                      warm air=decrease power, increases economy

I don't suscribe entirely to what I've been told in that regard though...

i've heard that adding acetone to fuel is bad that it screws up injectors, oil and the o2 senor.... thats why i never tried it .... this is just what i heard so it might be complete bs

Maybe running straight acetone...but at such a low mixture, I don't detect any trouble or adverse effects, and I don't predict any problems. I've been running it since July I believe.

                            too many variables being changed
uh... if by overboosted you mean "right the fuck on" then, sure, it is.

I know, its a terrible way to conduct a scientific experiment.

But I need this car for DD, and can't conduct it in strict confines with repeatable results.

I just wanted to see if there was a overwhelmingly significant outcome, which it seems there isn't.

Figured any results is better than just trusting some guys word.
