It's probably a moot point to discuss stock air filters since Honda has long since discontinued them. So in my quest to find a suitable replacement I've chosen Fram knowing there might be better (or worse).
But I've noticed even they have tinkered with their design over the years. Since I drive my CB7 so infrequently these filters tend to stay clean a very long time.
So when I recently changed mine I noticed some very obvious differences between Fram's old and new versions. The older one has more pleats but the media appears thinner.
While the new one seems to have thicker media but less surface area (fewer pleats). Perhaps in the end it's not worth worrying about but I have noticed one issue and wondered if it's cause for concern.
After performing a coolant change the other day I had the opportunity to be in close proximity to the air filter. I was waiting for the engine to run long enough for the cooling fans to kick on twice when
I heard a distinct "whistling" sound coming from the air cleaner. I tried to vary the engine speed to see if there was any difference. And when the engine speed increased the whistle went away but after it returned to idle the whistling came back.
Just curious what stock filters most here are using and what thoughts you have about them...
