i researched, but nothing quites answer my question. it is time for an oil change (which may or may not answer my own question, but) nonetheless, i just check the oil like 2 weeks ago and it was low. so i added a quart or so just to get it back to max line. drove hard as usual since. check it again yesterday and it was again low...not low enough for the light to come on, but low enough for comfort. i have no smoking out the back, and the only visual leak i see is under the distributor cap (obvious, but not conclusive). would that be enough of a leak to drain that much oil? or do i have some sorta internal leak. after typing all this i think i answered it myself, but still want to hear some other constructive thoughts. thanks.

First of all are you checking your oil on a level surface and when your engine is cooled down? Second of all if you see oil coming from the dizzy replace the o-ring on it.

Prob not crawl underneath and see if its leaking. Your going to have to pull your whole distributor out which is like 3 10 or 12mm screws that hold it in place and you will see the o-ring there. And no i wouldnt think that would be your major source.

if you burned a quart per 3000 miles, you'd never see any smoke......even burning a quart per 1000 miles, you won't see any smoke usually......most cars DO burn oil and it's perfectly fine as long as it's less than 1 quart per 5000 miles, because even dealerships will do nothing to brand new cars burning that little......common places that leak are the oil pan, valve cover gasket, dizzy o-ring, cam seal, and if those places aren't the reason then it could be piston rings, valve stem seals (will smoke some at start up if they're the problem), or the main seal, but you would notice a drip or two on the ground at least if it were a seal or gasket probably....and on the 7th day, deevergote rested and called his mom.

yeah..I had a leaking Camseal..and Im getting that replaced as I speak...BUT when you replace the camseal..its EXTREMELY WISE to change out your Timing belt...because OIL and RUBBER don't like each other...and you don't want that oil soaked belt snapping ..when you're on your way to work or wherever...so.....lets see
Leaks:
camseal ( change Timing belt "2 Belts" )
Oilpan
valvecover
disp. O ring
valve stem O rings..
Front Main seal ( change Timing belt )
Rear Main seal ( clutch slippage )
just double check the obvious...but like "fizz" said...its normal for an engine to burn oil but not that much!
GOOD LUCK mayne!!92 LX. A6 with GUDE bullfrog Cam. M2S4 transmission..Gutted H23 intake mani. The rest you will just have to find out!
