Axle popped out during suspension work

My driver's side axle popped out after disconnecting the UCA and struggling to get a shock assembly back in. I guess the weight of the knuckle popped it out. Will I have to replace my axle now?

did it pop out of the transmission, or did the joints inside the boot pop out? the latter happened to me during my suspension install and i was forced to replace the axle

It popped out of the transmission. Just as luck would have it nobody has a flippin 36mm axle nut, and I REFUSE to get somebody else to fix it.

aero, when you say pop it back in, what do you mean? I just have to get the knuckle off and push it back into place, yes?

If it came out the tranny, did any tranny fluid come out? You might have to refill it. If you lube the end on the axle, you can pop it right back into the tranny.

No tranny fluid I don't think, just that geese poop olive axle grease. I'm just praying that my CV joints weren't damaged...it seems like the knuckle can't rotate; but I think that's a product of the axle putting pressure against the tierod and the LCA. I got the jaw puller and I'll probably have to get the LCA ball joint tomorrow along with the axle nut socket...hopefully I can just grease it all up and pop it back into place.

did it pop all the way out? still trying to picture what happened. As long as the actual joints didnt come apart though, you should be good.

No, it seems to be about an inch out...the joints are still on, and the CV side appears to be fine...but on the tranny side there's a ring of grease about an inch deep, and there's some axial play (in-and out), which, considering the weight of the knuckle assembly would lead me to believe that the tranny side of the axle came apart INSIDE the boot. Is that possible?

All axles should have some play in and out, not all that much, but its there (since it has to be able to extend when the car is lifted). I've never ripped one apart, so Im not sure what it would do, but it should be fine, just push the end back in. And when you push it back in, only apply force to that part closest to the tranny. dont use the knuckle to push the whole axle assembly in, that'll only most likely cause damage to the joints.

OK, last call...anyone got air tools they'd be willing to rent in NYC? I can't lower the car back down to loosen the axle nut as the suspension won't line up with the axle out of place...if nobody does then it looks like I'm getting it towed to Pep Boys...
