New to website and Honda's, and have a question.

Greetings everyone. My name is Ryan and this is my first post here! I've got a '91 Accord that has 210,000 miles on it. I acquired it from my mother after she bought a new CR-V. She got it from my grandpa, so I am the third owner! Now this car has been taken care of it's entire life and is in really good shape considering it's mileage. My question is about the engine. How long do they normally last. I know it will need a rebuild, especially with me wanting to put a turbo on it. Where are some good places to get rebuild kits?
Would it be cheaper to just get a new motor? Any and all questions will be appreaciated. Thanks!

congrats on the car dude and welcome to the site

the miles arent too too high and the motor should last much longer.

a new motor for the turbo would be a good choice tho. something like the f22b or the f22a6 would handle boost perfect and give u a good platform to work off with NA if u change ur mind.

Thanks man. How can I tell what motor is in my car, It's a dx model. I'm thinking it's a f22a1 but I'm not sure. Like I said I'm new to honda's, so sorry if I ask too many newbie questions.

yep its an f22a1, same as the lx. in most cases the ex and the se have the f22a6, if its a 90-91 ex or se i think it has the a4 or a6

i would check the maintence records soon as well, just to get an update on when the axles, ball joints, belts, gaskets and everything were last done. I know that CKYskaters accord when he had it was still pulling hard at like 295,000 miles, so i know they last long long times. As travis said the f22b would be a great engine for NA or boost. You can always do a compression and leak down test and see what the results are. If you know the car hasn't been abused, and regular maintenance has been done, you should easily get 300k out of it, if you keep it stock. I'd be wary of boosting an engine w/ that many miles.

That's why I want to rebuild the motor and replace the tranny. I've got a ton of spare turbo parts left over from my Eclipse, and I'm really intested in boosting it.

Tranny may not rebuild. If it's a manual, they are pretty durable. Of course it can't hurt anything either. I've got an f22a6 Intake manifold, the kind with IAB's if you want to pick up a few ponies for cheap. I'm in the process of cleaning it.

Anywho, I'm not sure if you know yet about the 1st and 2nd gen DSM manifolds fitting up to the f22ax blocks, if not your in for a treat.

Personally, I would look over the records of your car and see what was recently done and what needs to be done for regular maintenance. I would do these needed items first and also do a suspension/brake check on your entire car and replace all that is needed. Ball-joints are NOT something you want to fracture/break while you or anyone is driving, you can get into a bad accident or others. Assuming it is in decent shape, you will have a reliable car for many miles ahead of you. For example, we have 90-93 Accords and the ones with the most mileage are at 290K and 250K miles.

I would locate an engine with iron cylinder sleeves (F22a1/a4/a6, JDM F22B, JDM F20A, etc) and build this engine for whatever boost level you plan to be at on the side. When your engine is built and ready to drop-in, then deal with removing your old motor and installing. Keep in mind you will have some downtime here more than likely.
