    automatic transmission?

i'm fairly adapt to manual transmissions and i don't have as much experience on automatic transmissions as i would like to. i hope i can get some answers on a car i'm trying to diagnose. a search didn't suffice.

the car starts strong but when placed in "drive" the car refuses to budge at times. it runs the car then it fails. it's really intermittent. my guess is that it only moves the car before the oil gets up to operating temps then it stops running. i really don't have a clue on where to start the troubleshooting. maybe i should do transmission flush and refill. the owner doesn't know how long it has been since the ATF was replaced. could this be a start?

what are the typical symptoms/headaches when it comes to our old transmissions? do the stall solenoids tend to go bad on high mileage motors? torque converter failure? any insight is much appreciated. thanks in advance!

A Complete Tranny Fluid Exchange wouldn't hurt anyhow.
That would immediately eliminate low/dirty fluid problems.

I'd suggest to read this Post it may give some ideas.

I'd say it would, not much difference, mechanically, between 4th & early 5th Gens.
