Octane Levels in H22 and F22

Yeah, so as far as I know, we're supposed to run 91 octane in H22's right? Cause of the knock sensor and being a higher compression engine. Correct me if I'm wrong...

But...say I were going on a road trip. I know it's only saving a few bucks, but it adds up....is there anything wrong with using regular 87 octane level fuel if I'm just going to be on a highway crusing at around 3700-3800 RMP, but not killing it or anything like that? I'm not going anywhere now, I went to Ottawa yesterday and used 91 anyway, but I was just wondering if it would be so bad.

Also...about the F22...I was reading through my owner's manual a while back, and I noticed that it said we should use 91 octane in our stock engines...WTH? I've never heard anything like that and not mine, nor my mom's 92 EX-R had ever been run with anything other than 87 or Regular. Funny thing is, after stating that, the booklet then added "running a higher octane fuel than this is not necessary and will not give you any gains in terms of reliability or performance." Or something to that extent....What do they mean "HIGHER" octane? Most gas stations, up here at least don't have anything more than 91, and a handful, Petro-Canada, as far as I know, is the only one that even has 94....I just find it ironic that they say to use 91, and add using anything higher than 91 won't change anything....there hardly is ever anything higher than 91 available in the first place!

We all did/do run Regular gazo in our F's right?

I run Shell Optimax 98 RON with Wynns Octane Booster bumps up to 102 RON
in my stock F22A5. 91 RON is Standard Un Leaded Petrol , 95 RON is Premium ULP & 98 RON is the Optimax ULP.

arent the octane ratings in australia different than those used in north america?

regardless, the higher the octane rating, the safer you are especially if you beat on your engine. higher compression needs better gas. same with higher revs.

Yeah, I don't know. There are different Standards between USA and Australia. We use the Metric System over here. Like Kilometres, Litres, Kilowatts, Newton Metres etc. More in line with Asia Pacific etc. Not too sure of Octane Ratings though, I assumed they were universal. There's also UK Gallons, US Gallons, so it can get quite confusing. Gas to Americans is Petrol to Aussies. Gas to Aussies is LPG Gas. Just like Hood = Bonnet, Trunk = Boot, Fender = Guard and so on. USA drive on the right, We drive on the Left.
But I'm getting used to the US lingo.

You're probably thinking of 91 RON which is equivelent to 86 octane. Our engines require a minimum of 86 octane which can still be found some places like sunoco and those crazy gas stations with like 2903749827398 different octanes of gas. I have used 86 octane in my F22 and it drove just like 87. Though theres been a lot of debate on wheather using high octane gas makes any difference, I have always found that it does in our cars. When I put 93 in, everything just runs better and the car seems more touchy from lights. as far as the H22, the minimum I would run in it would be 89. even if you're driving on the highway at high revs, you could still have pre-detonation and it could damage the engine. my mom had a lexus that took "PREMIUM FUEL ONLY" she always used 89 and it ran great. the owners manual said 91 was the min too. one time she accidently filled it with 87 and it was a bad scene. it pinged and knocked like crazy. SO, if i were you: i would at least pump 89 or 91 on an h22.

well i've run 91 since the start anyway, i was just wondering. i know like, my dad has parents have a tl-s and it takes 91, BUT you can run 87 and it can adjust for it, but you lose some performance, but he drives super conservatively, and the only reason he got the type was was because it had white face gauges and he could see them better.

On an H22 I would run nothing less than premium. If you don't the engine will ping, esp. under high engine load.

yeah, BMW's and mercedes as well. It is a really nice feature that I wish could be retro-fitted somehow for an H22. paying extra $ for gas adds up over a few months..at least for me (35,000 mi./year)
