Find out what code is being thrown when the Check Engine Light comes on. If it's a 17, then it's your VSS like 91accord4door said. Replacing the VSS takes ten minutes and is pretty cheap.
It's worth doing because the VSS affects your idle. Also, your cruise control won't work without a good VSS.- Ghosty

Do you recommend a new VSS or is it ok to rip one from a dismantler?
If new, does it have to be OEM or is it something easily found at NAPA/Chief/etc/?90 Accord Ex, F22A4. Slight fire damage.Comment

The VSS usually quits after about 90-100k miles. If you swap one in from a motor with ~100k you may have to replace again later! You can buy them online for about $40 aftermarket.

Brand new VSS from Honda costs over $300!!!
You're better off finding one at a junkyard or from a member parting out their Accord.

yeah i have the same problem.. i kind of fixed mine though.. im not sure if it was just a coinsidence though.. my power steering fluid was real low and after filling it my speedometer works most of the time.. not sure it was just an accident.. but it worked for me... good luck!!!R.I.P 90 lx fodo ..my baby!
