    head valves cleaning?

that sounds weird, but i have been searching now for 30 min and i can't find the right type of valves when i type in valve cleaning. I want to clean the valves on my h23 head. I've been using a dremel and a fairly soft wire brush. (if that just skrewed everything i have an extra head with good looking valves.) It took off the carbon, but it's just not clean enough. I was reading that one thread were dutchaccord was cleaning up his stuff but he only showed the head and the block getting cleaned with that paint stripper. (i'm going to get some of that here soon so i can do the same)

How and what can i effectivly clean the valves. I dont mind taking time cause i took 3 days cleaning the head with purple power and a brush and that SUCKD! I just dont know what would be safe on the valves and what is important to super clean. anywho, thankx

You can just use a Bench Grinder with a Wire Brush Attachment to clean the valves. After the carbon deposits are removed soaked them in WYNNS CARBON BLASTER. Then for a final touch, put the valves into a Cordless Drill Chuck and Polish up with some 120 grit Wet & Dry. Dremel out the Ports with a wire brush attachment. Reface the Valves if Neccessary and Lap them in.

I"m wanting this to be a DIY project... And all and all the head isn't terribly dirty...just got a few spots that i couldn't get too very well. But with enough elbow grease and a new set of brushes i aught to be aight.

Get a Sheet of 120 grit WET & DRY Sandpaper. 120 is very fine grit.
If you have a bench drill. Put the valve into the chuck and start the drill. While Pouring water onto the back of the valve, hold a piece of the 120 W&D against the valve, keep wetting it down as you go. Clean off the water and lubricate the valves with oil until your ready to install.

120 grit isnt very fine at all.. its finer than some, but there are plenty of higher grits to choose from.. when dealing with engine parts i would want to go with one of the finest possible as to not scratch up the parts any more than necessary..

that's what i'm worried about is scratching. i think i'm sticking with carb cleaner and a wire brush on the dremel.

well things are going good, got the head all cleaned up and the valves in. I have the head on the block and cams in. I'm curious how to adjust the valve lash, but i'm fixing to do a search on that now...maybe you all will beat me to it. It just seems weird how to adjust them cause it's not directly connected like the f22 and the a20. can't wait to get this motor running. I'm thinking about trying to patch the crack on the other head and use it on my f22...that would be the bombay! anywho... Battle star is being watched...

i got the valves adjusted to .009 and .017... I'm having troubles with cyl 2. It makes a thunking noise everytime it goes to exhaust...kinda like the sound when you throw a big rock into water.. thoink. I thought that cyl 3 would do the same because i am having problems getting the cams turned correctly to check the lash on 2 and 3. 1 and 4 are easy cause the arrow points.. 180 degrees is not the easiest to get.. anyone have any suggestions as to what this is or a better way to get it aligned?

that is for a h22...not an h23.. different heads. And i found that they require different clearances..
