    Ticking sound from mystery box

Ok the other day when i was putting new plugwires on my car i noticed a ticking sound when i started it a few minutes afterwards. I thought one of my wires weren't making a connection. When i fired it up the next day the sound was gone. Well today i was checking my cam timing and it was all right. BTW I have a 92 accord with an F22b1 head on an A1 block. Well after it ran a few minutes. I took it for a ride. after i came back i noticed the ticking again. I found it and it was in the mystery box where the vaccum line from the egr hooks up. I pulled the line off the egr and had no vaccum at the line and the little deal it hooks up to was ticking. My question is what the F is this ticking and why do i have no vaccum at this line. Also I noticed that my car is pretty ballless now. I starts breaking up around 5200 and will not pull to save its life a little before that. I am using a POA ecu and i have no CELs. I am going to check the wires at the ecu because i had to do some playing around down there for this swap's computer. Also the VTEC lights kick on at about 2500 rpm so my vtec is kicking in here. Is this right bcuz if it is that sucks. Please help. Also i used a OBX-R stainless header and i am getting a knock sound and the front stud is pretty close to the coresupport or what ever that big metal deal is could this be my knocking. I searched and couldn't find nothing on my tick so cmon please spare me the search lecture just this one time please. IF anybody can help with any of these problems please do. Thanks.

Ok i just talked to a friend and he said that i'm running lean very lean, due to my vtec kicking in so soon at 2500 and my spark plugs are pretty fuckin clean, too clean. So that explains the chronic balllessness and the knocking sound would be spark knock, not my header. So if i can't get some help with this i am going to rewire everything back to stock and buy a fuel and vtec controller probably apexi or feilds. But if there is sombody out there who knows why i am getting leaned out so bad and my vtec is fuckin up please help.

well my shitty idle is back. when i start the car cold it goes up to 2200 and bounces between that and about 1700 then after 30-45 seconds it quits and goes to 1800 and idles steady with a small really slow surge about 100 rpm difference. This goes along i believe with my new problem. Now once it gets good and warmed up the solenoid looking deal that the EGR vacume line goes to in the mystery box ticks but when i rev the car up it quits also the idle drops down and is pretty steady at 750 or so. The motor is pretty smooth and the knock sound i had mentioned in my other thread about the ticking in the mystery box quits. Me and some friends were looking at it found that the egr vacume line has no vacumm and unplugging it does not effect the idle and then we unplugged the mystery box and left the map sensor plugged in and the ticking quits then we unplugged the egr and got no CELs and it still ran the same. I don't know if the car is still ballless or not but i am going to put new gas in tomorrow and new plugs. VTEC requires premium so i'll try that plus my gas is from october, no license means no gas consumption!
So i'll see what happens and add on to this thread to make another attempt to complete it.

hey, i havent seen this thread until today and i just realized that the ticking noise you are talking about, is going on in my mystery box as well. and i have the full f22b1 swap in there. its wierd because only sometimes that ticking occures. i cant figure it out. also, i dont know if you are having this problem but my accelleration isnt what the old engine felt like, especially in the lower rpm. well i am sorry i cant figure out the ticking but at least i know what you are talking about.

Well, I can help with part of this. There isn't supposed to be any vacuum to the EGR valve at idle. At idle, the EGR valve is closed. It opens up when you get to a cruising speed. As long as you are idling or accelerating there is no vacuum. As far as the ticking, there isn't much in that box that CAN make any noise.

Here are a couple of pics of the inside of this "mystery box"

All of those solenoids can make noise, its just them working.... as to them causing problems when ticking, i dont know
