    automatic transmission - holding gears

so lately my car has been running strangely. Its been holding the gears for a long time, i drive an automatic. It holds first gear until about 3100 rpms, and second gear goes so long that i let off the gas pedal beause it sounds like its painful to the motor. Today i looked at my spark plugs and i pulled one out and it was covered in oil. does this mean i need a new valve cover gasket. and aslo could this be causing the motor to hold the gears out so long?

If it's the valve cover gaskets, the oil will be on the part of the plug outside the cylinder (in the well). If the oil's on the elctrodes, your problem is a completely different animal.

I've gone through a couple valve cover gaskets, and all that I had due to them was a small oil leak... I think your symptoms are something else.
I swear, eventually I'll run out of things to break.

I guess I was wrong... I broke it all. Died 10/29/06

the oil on mine is on the first and last plugs, and the oil is on the end that screws down so, i cleaned them off and put them back in and took them back out and they were covered in oil agian..

That's the infamous spark plug tube gaskets. Search around here, as there are great DIYs.

I notice that even changing the valve cover gasket i get jelly like oil coming out. I guess it's only natural and can't be helped. *DONT OVER TIGHTEN the ACORN nuts thingy...

Change ur fluid , the ATF that is, and see if the red is burnt or if you are low. Is it slipping?
        hahahahah

Check your automatic transmission fluid level? Does it need changing?

^^yep, just follow the line down. It goes past the battery and you can easily see where it terminates at the transmission.
